POLIO CONNECTION OF AMERICA

AS YOU KNOW THE SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM IS IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE

WHAT IS THE ADMINISTRATION GOING TO DO ?

As a first step they are going to reduce as much as possible the awarding of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and then they are going to review those who have SSDI benefits and attempt to take them away.

Today, the Social Security Administration (SSA) denies 70 percent of all initial SSDI applications but, most of them are reversed under legal appeal by the Administrative Law Judges.

However, the Administrative Law Judges who work for and are paid by the SSA are now being told to forget the law when they determine who receives disability benefits. The Administrative Law Judges are told to follow the agency’s ‘policy’ (not the Law) and as a result many more people, including Polio Survivors will be denied their entitled benefits.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? .
We are asking you to support a new bill which has been introduced to the legislation in Washington by Rep. George Gekas (R-PA) which will require the SSA to follow the law, not the SSA’s own internal policies. The Administration, of course is expected to strongly oppose this bill and for your own interests (even if you have SSDI now) you should join us in this effort of supporting the introduced bill.

Remember, it was only thorough the efforts of your Polio Movement that we achieved the ability to receive SSDI. It did not come easily. Let us not lose this entitlement that we have secured.

We urge you to telephone now your local representative to Washington and tell him / her that you want his / her support in regard to the bill that has been introduced known as H. R. 1544, “The Remedy ‘97 : The Federal Agency Compliance Act”. Do it today!! A telephone call has a very strong impact with your representatives so do it first. The Insurance you protect may be your own.

Follow that telephone call with an E-mail message, a Fax message and even a letter. Make sure that others you know also make telephone calls and have this message reproduced in your polio and disability newsletters that you receive or prepare.

We are in an alliance in this effort with ALLSUP INC. a national legal organization dedicated to helping the disabled community.
