Atlanta - Children should get their polio vaccines in a combination of
shots and sugar cubes, the government said yesterday, announcing the
first major change in administering the vaccine since 1961.
Under the new guidelines, infants would be injected with a vaccine made
from killed polio virus twice in their first four months, followed by two
oral doses between ages 1 and 6.
Currently, most children get three doses of oral vaccine by age 2, but a
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel in June urged
the change because oral vaccine causes eight to 10 polio cases a year,
mostly among kids.
The recommendation is only a guideline, but it is likely to be followed
by most of the nation's doctors. It is effective next year."
SEPTEMBER 19 COMMENTARY ON VACCINE REVISION
To all Polio Survivors
Congradulations to those who sent at our request e-mail, letter or fax to the President on the Polio vaccination
Information now received has informed us that the appropriate 'heads' of our government have now signed off on the recommendation of the CDC panel. Who says pressure don't count?
The government will now recommend that the Sabin 'live' vaccination which can cause polio will be replaced with the Salk 'dead' vaccination which cannot cause polio.
This recommendation will state that the first two doses of Polio vaccination will be with the Salk dead injection vaccine. This is our victory.
However, we as you know consider this a partial victory since the final dose recommendation will be with the Sabin 'live' oral vaccination which may cause polio in the individual receiving the dose or to someone else who's body is not fully protected or cannot appropriately respond to the polio virus attack.
Therefore, we suggest that you strongly consider insisting that the third dose be also the Salk 'dead' vaccination. Take care of all your loved ones first.
The only reason for the Sabin 'live' vaccine is to attempt to spread the Sabin 'live' virus which is a weak polio virus to others who do not take the Salk vaccination and possibly give polio protection to them from the 'wild' polio virus. Note that there has not been one recorded case of polio from the 'wild' polio virus in the US in over 15 years. Draw your own conclusion.
Also note that this program is not scheduled until sometime next year so don't be fooled and think that what you are getting now is the safe Salk 'dead' vaccination for the first two doses. Check and be sure before you sign off with your doctor.
Again our congradulations to all who sent messages and our thanks
