POLIO CONNECTION OF AMERICA****

JANUARY 1999 NEWSLETTER

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

In this issue we review some of the PPS research now underway. However, before we go into that we would like to quote from a recent article in The Boomerang 10-98 wherein we read:-

“What would have happened if FDR hadn’t contracted polio? It is something to ponder.”

Well, we all can guess at the answer but the obvious one would be, “ who knows”. Without anyone pushing you can bet your bottom dollar that little if anything would have been done and the polio problem would still be with us.

Our action, with your help has as we advised you resulted in a ten fold increase in NIH funding for Post-Polio Syndrome research. One of the new projects is described in this newsletter on page 4. It’s cost is more than the whole PPS project cost of each of many prior years and similar funds for this project is allotted for 3 more years.

In rough numbers a million dollars has been allocated to 17 other projects which are relevant to PPS as well as other Neuromuscular Diseases. The final million dollars for FY97 will be used by Dr. Marionos C. Dalakas. These PPS projects are designed to learn more, assess current methodologies and technologies and to refine old methods as well as to develop new ones.

In future newsletters we will try to keep you informed as to the outcome of the many noted PPS research projects. We look forward to the day our problems will be solved like the basic problem caused by the polio virus was solved with the Polio Vaccinations.

Relative the polio vaccine we received a message that each year we spend over $230 million vaccinating 4 million Americans. The article was written by Lauran Neegaard an AP medical writer. We would like to see the article and would appreciate it if anyone can secure it for us.

In regard to the Polio vaccines please remind all your friends, relatives and everyone else that the only way one can get an adverse reaction is from the Sabin ‘live’ oral vaccination,. This adverse reaction not only can cause paralytic polio but also death and other unnecessary problems. The faster this message gets out, the faster the choice will be for the Salk ‘dead’ injection polio vaccination.

We now note that the Tylenol company is distributing to local pharmacies information in a booklet entitled, “Your Child’s Immunization”. In the booklet they state, “There are no common side effects other than redness and/or soreness at the site of the shot.” We are thankful for that remark. Obviously, they for reasons best known to themselves did not desire to state more. We received our copy from the local CVC pharmacy. As you know we have our own flyer and if you want a copy(s) to distribute to others send us a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Let us again reiterate that as long as the Sabin ‘live’ oral polio vaccination is used others will be required to use the Salk ‘dead’ injection polio vaccination. The quicker we get rid of the Sabin ‘live’ oral polio vaccination the quicker we will be able to call for the elimination of all polio vaccinations just as was done with the Smallpox vaccination.

At that time we hope to be able to secure for our research use and/or other use the noted 230 million dollars.
