Hestia Mural Restoration Project
February 1: The East Coast premiere of "Signs out of Time, the Story of Archaeologist Marija Gimbutas", a documentary by Starhawk and Donna Read, will be presented at Wright Hall Auditorium, Smith College, on Sunday, February 1, from 2-5:30 p.m. The snow date is February 8, same time.
A benefit for the Hestia Mural Restoration Project, it will premiere concurrently in Northampton and San Francisco.
The documentary traces her life story, focusing on the controversy that erupted when she dared to present her interpretations about the cultures of early Europe: that women had high status and power along with men; that the societies they were egalitarian and peaceful; and that art played a central role.
If her theories are correct, then peace, reverence for the earth and the honoring of life are not only human capabilities, they are the very underpinnings of European civilization.
Gimbutas's work curts to the heart of basic questions about human nature. Are human beings innately aggressive and domineering, doomed to live in violence and destroy eachoither and the earth? Or are we capable of creating cultures based on cooperatiuon and peace?
