The
nineteenth century found the full range of traditional. Decorative art
flourishing, especially in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perak. Enjoying
royal patronage, the Malay artist craftsman working with silk, gold, silver or
wood, lived and practiced his craft within the perimeters of a royal palace or
residence of a high ranking official. His work was of the highest level of
excellence: it was never standardized nor commercialized.
In 1930, a
group of Malay and European officials and their wives set up the Kelantan Arts
and Crafts Society to market crafts in Singapore and other major towns in
Malaya. A period of transition began during which the craftsman’s portfolio
expanded to include articles of popular interest. Butter dishes and cigarette
boxes were produced alongside finger bowls and betel boxes. Apart from that, the
craftsman was completely free to create his own designs, working at his own
pace.
However,
there was alack of concerted effort to train young hands and develop regular
market for their products. This lack would be remedied in the decades to
come.
The 1950an
saw a climate of new beginning for the nation as well as its culture. A
renaissance of sort sprang up in the culture arena. Amidst a backdrop of
social-economic progress, the nation’s craft traditions received new life and
new direction as the government actively stepped in to preserve national
heritage.
In the 1970s,
there developed a global appreciation of things ethnic. The feeling was, ‘There
is nostalgic input of the handmade in a plastic world………’
Tourists beat
a path to countries where a rich cultural legacy was part of life. Malaysian
crafts, not left behind, experienced a further revival. late 1970s, there was
a growing feeling that as the nation advanced economically,
its heritage should no longer be preserved as cottage
industry. Heritage preservation and its artist expression had toht into
mainstream society.
Traditional crafts have always been family or communal affrahores are done, women gather at their homes to plait mengkuang mats, fashion pottery or weave at their looms. Skills and motifs have been passed from mother to daughter or at any rate have remained within the family.
