Surrendered weapons destroyed in strife-torn Sulawesi
In Indonesia's troubled province of Central Sulawesi, police have destroyed more than
eight thousand weapons surrendered by Christians and Muslims.
Mark Bowling reports the move follows a vow by leaders of both religious communities
to end more than two years of sectarian violence.
More than a thousand people have died in fighting. Tens of thousands have been
forced from their homes in the worst hit district of Poso. Peace talks brokered by the
Indonesian government led to an agreement by Christian and Muslim leaders to
promote peace. As a first step home made firearms, bows and arrows and spears
were handed into police and they're now being destroyed. Mark Bowling, Jakarta.
