Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union
on the peace agreement signed in Malino - South Sulawesi - on
12 February 2002
The European Union welcomes the formal peace talks that took place in Malino -
South Sulawesi –on 11-12 February between representatives of the Christian and
Muslim communities of the Moluccas, and the subsequent 11-point declaration to end
all violence in Moluccas, signed on 12 February.
The European Union welcomes the mediation of the government of Indonesia in the
peace process, making possible both the talks and the declaration.
The European Union expects that the Malino declaration will be an important step to
the restoration of law and order in the Moluccas and in the reconciliation of the
Christian and Muslim communities in the province.
The European Union urges both signatory parties to the 11-point declaration to fully
implement its content.
The European Union urges the government of Indonesia to take the necessary
measures against intruders seeking to disrupt the ongoing peace process in the
province.
The European Union at the same time encourages the Indonesian Government to
initiate rehabilitation and development activities in the area, in order to obtain a
broader public support for the peace process.
The European Union reiterates its commitment and support to a peaceful solution of
regional conflicts and its availability to assist the government of Indonesia in the
implementation of the peace agreement.
The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the
associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries members of
the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.
