Meeting delegation members with leaders Moluccan community
After two closed meetings with moslem leaders and leaders from the christian
community in Ambon, Saturday (26/01) Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare,
Yusuf Kalla, said money is no crucial problem for the government in settling the
Maluku conflict. The most important thing is that the people of both communities will
sit together in order to discuss possible solutions of the Maluku conflict; the
governement will take care of the money, Kalla said.
From the dialog between the government and community leaders it became clear that
the people want the government to restore the peace and legal order. Next to this
there are signals from both christians and muslims in the direction of a common
dialog. Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono, said it is clear that there are similarities and differences, which need to
be settled. Because of those differenc! es Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare,
Jusuf Kalla, who was scheduled to join the delegation to Ternate, at last stayed
behind to continue the dialog with both Moluccan communities.
Yudhoyono was not willing to meet people's request to clarify the role of the
movement of the South Moluccan Republic (RMS) and the Laskar Jihad in the Maluku
conflict, since 19 January 1999. Minister Yudhoyono said that he did not want to run
into hasty conclusions. According to him all objective conditions in the field have been
identified for designing a solution.
On the presence of security forces in the Maluku and North-Maluku provinces, the
Head of the General Staff (TNI) lt.gen. Djamari Chaniago, said that their presence is a
political decision. Chaniago confirmed that for example a reduction of security forces
depends on the decision of the head of the civil emergency administration, who in fact
depends on what the people want.
The meeting with the moslem community was attended by, among others, the
chairman of the Badan Amanat Muslim Maluku, Al Ustad Ali Fauzi, the chairman of
MUI Maluku Ustad Adbullah Polpoke, the chairman of the NU Karim Rahayaan, the
chairman of the Muhammadiyah Maluku Idris Tatuhey, the chairman of Satgas Amar
Ma'ruf Nahi Munkar Ustad Muhammad Attamimi, Tamrin Eli, and the leaders of the
Posko's from Batu Merah Movella, Alfatah, Waihaong Hitu, Kailolo, Rumoni, Tulehu,
and Seram.
The meeting with the christian community was attended by, among others, the
chairman of the GPM Synod Rev. I.W.J. Hendriks, John Ruhulesin, Bishop Ambon
Mgr.P.C. Mandagi, Pastor Agus U., as well as leaders of youth movements and
