Indonesia - OCHA Consolidated Situation Report No. 57
29 December 2001 - 04 January 2002
MALUKU
General Situation
On Saturday (29 Dec.) a bomb exploded under a parked bus on a road besides the
governor's office in Ambon. No casualties were reported.
It has now been clarified that 2 Brimob personnel were injured in the incident on 27
December reported last week, when unidentified gunmen attacked them in the
Tantui-Galala area, east of Ambon City. Later the same day, two policemen were shot
and injured in the Muslim village of Nania. At about 1.30 PM a Christian speedboat
with 2 people on board was attacked by 3 Brimob personnel in a boat near Halong in
Ambon Bay. In the ensuing encounter marines at the Halong Naval Base opened fire
on the Brimob boat. All 3 Brimob policemen escaped and are reported missing. A
man on the Christian boat was killed.
Assessments
Mercy Corps sent a team to the villages of Tulehu, Tial and Tengah-tengah, south of
Ambon Island, on Thursday (3 Jan.) for a one-day monitoring assessment of non-food
items, and water and sanitation.
AcF sent an assessment team to West Seram on Wednesday (2 Jan.) for the water
and sanitation sector.
Health
An IMC doctor visited the villages of Waesili, Waetewa, Simi and Lena on Buru Island
early this week. A total of 46 cases of measles were found in the villages, except
Waesili, and 260 children were subsequently vaccinated. According to IMC, 19
children have died in the last 3 weeks. Contrary to some claims by health officials, the
NGO reports that information received from the villages indicates that the victims were
residents of Buru and had not recently arrived from Central Sulawesi.
IMC will send a new doctor who has just arrived from Bali to Wamsisi, Buru Island on
Friday (4 Jan.). An IMC team will also proceed to Leksula to rehabilitate and restock
the Puskesmas, and to carry out mobile clinic activities.
MSF-B returned from a five-day trip to Seram, covering Ketapang, Asaude, Buano,
Aryate, and Telaga Biru, where they continued their mobile health clinic programme
and distribution of drugs.
NORTH MALUKU
General Situation
A police officer shot dead a displaced person from Ambon in Toboko, South Ternate,
on Wednesday (2 Jan.). Following the incident, local people blocked and burned old
tires on the streets and activities came temporary to a halt during the day.
A team of national legislators visited North Maluku from 28 to 30 December 2001. The
team visited IDP and returnee sites in Jailolo, Sahu and Ibu sub-districts, and held
meetings with government, TNI and police officials. The purpose of the visit was to
review the security situation in North Maluku as well as the conditions of IDPs and
returnees. Some university students demonstrated against the visit.
Food
The distribution of the second phase of government food assistance in Ternate City
has been completed. The government is starting distribution at the sub-district level
and will extend it to the villages.
Best wishes for a happy New Year 2002!
