Indonesia - OCHA Consolidated Situation Report No. 59

GENERAL
An evaluation meeting conducted jointly by the governors of Maluku and North Maluku
and their respective military and police commanders have recommended that the
state of civil emergency-first imposed on 27 June 2000-be lifted in North Maluku and in
parts of Maluku. Ambon and nearby islands will have the civil emergency extended for
another 6 months.
MALUKU
General Situation
On 13 January, the Christian village of Rutong in the Ambon mayoralty was attacked
by about 60-armed men. The residents and Brimob personnel stationed in the nearby
Hutumury and Leahari villages mounted a defence of the village. One attacker was
killed and four others were injured. There were no causalities from the village.
Additional security forces have now been deployed in the village.
Population Movements
Mercy Corps has sent a team to North Buru on Wednesday (16 Jan.) to monitor the
return of 786 displaced families to their original villages.
Assessments
Mercy Corps has sent a team to Haruku and Saparua islands for assessment of their
water and sanitation projects from 15 to 22 January. The team will also visit the sub-
districts of Amahai and Piru in Seram Island.
Health
MSF-B conducted their Mobile Clinic consultation this week in 33 IDP camps in
Ambon Island. They have also sent their medical and water and sanitation team to
South Buru from 14 to 20 January to visit 10 villages.
IMC conducted medical consultations on Saturday (12 Jan.) in Masohi, Seram Island.
UNICEF, in collaboration with the local health office, will hold a seminar on the 'Safe
Motherhood Assessment Results' of Buru and South East Maluku from 17 to 18
January. Local health staff and NGOs are expected to attend.
Water and Sanitation
Mercy Corps is working together with a local NGO to construct pump and reservoir
systems in Liang Village, Ambon Island, this week.
Education
SC UK is hosting the first coordination meeting with the provincial education office
along with local and international NGOs on Friday (18 Jan.).
NORTH MALUKU
Assessments and Monitoring
CARDI team went to Jailolo, Sahu, and Ibu sub-districts 14 - 15 January for the
preparation and further assessment on their small-scale programme.
WVI is monitoring their Community Rehabilitation Programme in Galela, Tobelo, Kao,
and Malifut sub-districts.
Health
WVI is conducting a health promotion information campaign on immunisation and the
handling of diarrhoeal condition through the local media 11 - 18 January.
MDM distributed emergency and traditional birth attendant's kits, a microscope and
other equipment to health centres in Sahu during 11 - 17 January. Health staff were
trained on how to use this equipment. In Ibu and Sahu sub-districts the NGO
distributed hygiene kits and conducted a brief course on how to take care of newly
born babies.
IMC conducted health consultations in Malifut, Kao, Tobelo, Galela, Daruba,
Bere-Bere, and Posi-Posi Rao during this week. Common health problems included
malaria, upper respiratory tract infection and skin diseases.
IMC and WVI, in coordination with Ternate City Health Office, will carry out joint health
activities starting 11 January 2002 during which IMC will support curative health and
WVI health promotion and disease prevention activities.
Water and Sanitation
WVI cleaned 3 wells in Bobawa village and Peleri of Malifut/Kao sub-district of North
Maluku district 11 - 18 January 2002.
Shelter & Non-food Items
PMI distributed 750 elementary school packages consisting of uniform, notebooks,
pens, and pencils to 10 schools in Jailolo, Sahu and Ibu sub-districts.
ICRC distributed reconstruction and agricultural material 15 - 16 January for selected
farmers in Weda sub-district of Central Halmahera.
