Wachusett NEMBA grew out of a bunch of us who ride in Leominster State Forest. For years we've noticed that the park was becoming more and more popular, and we became concerned that mountain bikers needed to organize so that we could have a single voice in working with the rangers.
We were also bummed that miles of choice singletrack was getting demo'ed by logging. The trails --now gone-- were never part of the official lineup of trails, so when the loggers came in and "harvested" the lumber, they weren't required to restore the trail.
Over the last year or so, we've worked closely with the rangers, and have succeeded in making these "unofficial" trails legitimate and open to bikes. In the process we've had numerous workdays where we've built bridges and boardwalks to protect some of the sensitive wetlands. For the 1999 season, we hope to build more singletrack!
We're also looking to branch out and work in other parks. Some of these could include Groton Town Forest, Townsend State Forest, the Mid-State Trails and elsewhere. It all depends on where are members are interested in helping out.
