What's Goin on?
Everyone's saying that this season in NC is one of the best ever. Lots of cold weather, and lots of people. But I beg to differ... Where's the snow? There hasn't been a REAL good snow here since November. This makes these "amazing" trips very icy. But hey, us east coasters have been dealing with this forever, so we'll get over it.

Today was the first day of my ski season. Lucky for me, I decided to go during holiday season, meaning holiday rates. So instead of paying 22 bucks, I ended up paying 39$. I would have payed more, but I went to a lesser developed resort. Hawksnest was the place, and it was pretty icy. If you check out the site in my slopes section, Hawksnest is pretty small with only a few trails. There mustv'e been two trails open which all were packed by mid-day. Not many boarders showed up that day, so I had the park all to myself. Whenever I fell off of the kicker (which happened a lot) I fell on the ice. A couple of hours before I left I hooked up with two other boarders and we challenged each other on the jumps, so that made the day worth it... and the fact that all the college girls were out of school...

This trip Iv'e been looking forward to for a while now. I headed up to WVA this time because I've heard AWESOME things about this Winterplace Resort. Well, I had loads of fun. This place has got to be 20x bigger than any other place in NC. One problem, Where's the pipe I've heard so much about. I'm riding down the slopes while looking at a trailmap, acting as much like a tourist as I can. I see the boardpark, but no pipe. I ask one of the boarders who is working on fixing jumps and he tells me that they tore it down...then he tells me that it sucked anyways...all it was was a bunch of snow that they had shaped into a half pipe...Probably a skier who made it. To get some decent snow you had to go way up to the top of the mountain, but it was worth it. In the morning it was very icy, by midday the 55 degree weather had softened it up a bit, but you had to watch out for some dirt spots. NC slopes are about 2-2 1/2 hours away while Winterplace is around 3 1/2, but that hour drive, all in all, was worth it.
