“Making the Band” Season 3: Episode #5
Welcome to my recaps!!
DISCLAIMER: Okay, here's the deal with the recaps. I use humor in them...the humor is just my opinion so I don't expect you to agree with everything I write. Remember that if you are going to be offended because I make fun of O-Town DO NOT READ MY RECAPS! There are plenty of sites that give just straight recaps. You have been warned so please don’t send reviews saying that you are offended. Thank you!! (In case you’re confused….Ash:Ashley, Jacko: Jacob (this is a reference to Michael Jackson, I’m NOT making fun of him! Well…nevermind) T-Rev: Trevor, E-Squared: Erik, and I call Dan, Dan.)
Oh man, could Dan be any cuter?!! Sorry…a little off track there. We start the show with a clip from the Brit tour. (Their still on tour with her?) The guys walk backstage and complain about how loud it is or something. Then all of a sudden Jacko is shirtless and accusing E-Squared of winking. (In the previous review I wrote that he said “He reeked.” Well kids, close captioning lies! Jacko said “wink.” My bad.) Apparently at the end of one of the songs each guy has a special gesture. Mike Morin asks them to run through that again. T-Rev tells us that E-Squared points, Jacko winks, Dan thrusts (hellz yeah), Ash jaw locks (Riight), and he waves. I guess this time E-Squared pointed and winked. This was a big no-no. E-Squared says he was never fond of being the pointer. Then Dan calls E-Squared a poor excuse for a human and Jacko calls him a wanker. Now this is where MTV tricks us. E-Squared looks like he’s going to cry and then he screams “I hate you and I hate this band!” and runs away. (When you see this clip in the preview it looks like E-Squared is really mad even though he was totally faking. Very sneaky MTV, very sneaky!)
Okay, the boys are going to be on a special half an hour TRL devoted just to them according to T-Rev. He feels it’s going to be crazy and insane. (Sure it will be.) The boys are at the TRL studio and Ash waves at imaginary people. Jacko reminisces about the last time they were on TRL, their video was number one. Mike Morin explains that it’s a typical TRL episode and they should talk about the Brit tour. Ash tells us that MTV has a surprise for them. Dan says last time the boys got a surprise Clive Davis came to their concert and told them their record went platinum so Dan likes surprises. Cut to Hilary introducing the show. (Two things here…how lucky is Hilary?! I mean one day she’s just chilling in Times Square and the next thing you know she’s working for MTV. Secondly, did this episode of TRL ever air?) Hilary says the fans are getting crazy so the guys better come out. The boys walk out and everyone is cheering and jumping up and down and such. Hilary asks them how the new season is going. Dan says it’s going good and they barely even notice the cameras anymore. (Hmm…Mommy when I grow up can I be a camera operator? They must see some interesting things.) Okay, so the point of this show is to “dig up dirt” on the guys. Cut to Dan looking confused. Hilary said TRL asked the guy’s Moms some questions and she is going to ask the guys the same questions and see if the answers match. Jacko is all like “Why would TRL interview my Mom? Great.” (Ahh..Jacko always the optimist.) What the guys don’t know is that their Moms are in the studio and will surprise them later on. The first question is for E-Squared. They asked his Mom what her least favorite of his fashion statements was. E-Squared says he used to rock these red goggles. Hilary asks if he wore them while driving. E-Squared says he went to high school in Florida and wanted to wear the goggles at all times to show the kids there that he was from New York and knew how to ‘keep it real.’ (I’m not even sure where to begin commenting on that one so I’ll leave it alone.) Cut to a tape of E-Squared’s Mom holding up the goggles. E-Squared flips out and says there was no need to show the actual goggles. His Mom laughs and says she hates looking at herself on TV. Next question is for T-Rev. Cue fake cheers from the audience because no on actually likes T-Rev. (Kidding! I love ya T!) Hilary asks T-Rev why his mother thinks he was brought into this world. T-Rev says to entertain. His Momma says it was so he could introduce her to Lionel Richie. (Heehee..Hello? Is it me you’re looking for?) T-Rev is all upset and pretends to leave as Ash trails behind him. T-Rev is embarrassed and says “Ah! MTV! Where do you get these ideas?” Jacko’s turn. What was your most embarrassing moment on stage Hilary asks. Jacko tells this story of a time he was in musical theater and he had to do a quick change. Apparently he had to do it so fast he forgot to zip up his pants and you could see his white shirt sticking out of the zipper all while he sang a song called ‘Inch Worm.’ (Noo….must refrain from mean comments…must be quiet…oh it’s so difficult.) Jacko’s Mom tells the same story and they show some pictures of Jacko in musical theater. His Mom is like “He’s gonna kill me.” Dan’s turn! Hilary asks Dan what his most annoying habit is. Dan says he used to sing a gospel song really loudly at the dinner table. Then he sings a little of it. A video of Dan running around his house in really bright red shorts is played while his Mom says it bothers her when Dan busts out into song at the top of his lungs. (Dude. I do the same thing…people are forever telling me to stop singing.) Hilary asks Dan where he learned the song and he shrugs. T-Rev said he probably learned it from “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” Then T-Rev gets excited and says “Will Smith plug.” (Okay, his obsession with Will Smith is a tad scary.) Dan can’t believe they showed that video. Ash’s turn. Hilary asks what member of O-Town Mrs. Angel think is the best influence on Ash. Ash says he always tells his Mom that Dan is like his big bro. He takes care of Ash and makes sure Ash pays his bills and knows what time to be down in the lobby. Then Hilary asks if Dan tucks Ash in at night. (Oh, he could tuck me in anytime.) Ash’s Mom says that she feels Dan has been a good influence on Ash. While she says this a really disturbing clip of Dan singing in a play or something is shown. Dan is wearing a bandana and some time of Mad Hatter hat. (I am extremely frightened right now.) Cut back to the studio and Dan just shrugs. (So modest..sigh.) It’s video time! They show part of “Liquid Dreams” and the Moms comment on how young the boys look. Then Ash imparts some words of wisdom on us. He says “The only problem with asking your family questions is that you know the answers will be one hundred percent the truth.” (So deep.) Then we go to a commercial break.
We’re back!! Hilary says the boys are doing good so far and calls them the newest members of the MTV family. (Isn’t that special.) Jacoko’s turn. When did his Mom know he was going to be a singer? (Man, even I know this one. “I’m been a solo singer since age five…bla-bla-bla…”) Jacko says it was probably the first time he did theater that his Mom made the realization. Now we see a video of Jacko looking like a shepard. (Why is Ragedy Ann there?) He was signing a song called “A Child of the King.” (Even back then he would only sing songs dealing with himself!) That’s when his Mom knew he had a “gift.” Question for Ash. Hilary asks who the first girl he kissed was. Ash says his Mom will know this because she worked at his school. It was a girl named Chelsea. It was after class in the science room with the lights out. Hilary says that’s intense for eighth grade. (When did we establish this was in eighth grade?) Ash’s Mom says that it was a girl named Chelsea. Chelsea heard that Ash had never been kissed and walked right up to him and ‘smacked him a good one.’ Then we see a scary picture of Ash wearing lipstick. (*shudder*) Now one for E-Squared. When did his Mom know he was going to be a rockstar? E-Squared says it was when he began singing in church. His Mom informs us it was when he was four and singing in the bathtub. Cut to a picture of E-Squared when he was little and an audio sample of him singing. This next one is for Dan. Who was Dan’s first girlfriend? He says it was a girl named Shannon in sixth grade. (Damn sixth grade romances. You’re like what eleven?) Then he retracts and says that Shannon was his first real girlfriend but he used to play He-Man and Shera with this girl so he wonders if that counts. That must have been what his Mom said because we see her saying “That’s right.” But Dan goes with Shannon. Dan’s Mom explains that when Dan was little he and this girl Maura used to pretend they were He-Man and Wonder Woman and chase each other around the playground. Then Dan is like “I did mention that but I won’t go against the judges. I won’t cry, but I will file a complaint later”…or something to that effect. (Who cares…he’s hot.) Back to Ash. Hilary asks when he was little what where his secret hiding spot was and what he hid there. He tells her it was his fort in a tree and he won’t say what he hid there. Ash’s Mom says it was his GI Joe Army box. Hilary asks if Ash still has the box and he says yes. Time for some T-Rev trivia. Hilary asks T-Rev if his Mom ever sold any of his stuff on E-bay. T-Rev says that he hopes not. WRONG!!! His Mom sold his Fievel doll. (The mouse from “An American Tale” in case you’re confused…besides I’m not sure if that’s how you spell it.) Then we see a home video of T-Rev running around. Hilary says “That’s wrong.” T-Rev falls to the floor and says that Fievel was his favorite doll. Cut to his Mom saying “Give me a break.” Then Dan is like “Sure like my Mom would ever sell any of my stuff on E-bay.” Ash is like “The doll is somewhere out there.” (Heehee…props on that joke.) and tells T-Rev he’ll get the doll back for him. Dan points at some random audience member says that she has it. T-Rev says one time a girl came up to him and said she had his Fibel doll and he didn’t believe her. Then T-Rev says “Thanks Mom.” Now for Jacko. Besides English what other language can he sing in? Jacko says when he went through his ‘training’ he learned to sing in Italian. (I love how he calls music lessons ‘training.’ It sounds like he’s going into the army.) His Mom says Jacko learned to sing in Italian and we see a picture of Jacko and Janie dressed in medieval clothing for absolutely no reason. Hilary asks if he can still sing in Italian. Jacko says he remembers a little because he used to sing it for tables at a restaurant he worked at. Then he sings a bit. Last question is for E-Squared. At what age did his Mom know he would be a heartbreaker? E-Squared says he never breaks hearts because he’s always the one who gets his heart broken. Audience coos. T-Rev is like say “Eight.” (That’s when women started rejecting him so he figures it must be the same for all guys.) E-Squared goes with eight, but no…Mom says it was at age four. She was taking pictures and had one left on her roll of film. Cut to E-Squared screaming out “Nooo!!” E-Squared posed against a wall with his shirt off. (Eww…) E-Squared is laughing hysterically as is everyone in the entire free world. And T-Rev says “That was so awesome.” Jacko requests to see the picture again and Hilary says it should be blown up poster size and made into a shrine. E-Squared is embarrassed and says “Out of all the pictures you could have shown on all the monitors in the studio you chose that one. Thanks Mom.” Now that the game is over Hilary teases about the surprise and they show a clip of “We Fit Together.” Shot of the Moms getting ready to go onstage. T-Rev’s Mom is scared to go out there. (I’m scared of T-Rev too so don’t feel bad Mrs. Penick.)
And we’re back. Hilary introduces the Moms and the boys are excited and hug their Moms and give up their seats for them. (While all this is going on the background music is “We Fit Together.” Does anyone else find that wrong?) T-Rev dances around like a lunatic and puts his Mom in a choke-hold. Hilary comments on the great relationships they seem to have. She says you know a lot about how a guy will treat his girlfriend by looking at the way he treats his Mom. (Soooo true!) Hilary says they seem like good boys. Jacko and his Mom won the contest. (If anyone cared.) Jacko and his Mom look at each other and do this fake laugh. (Riight!) Now we’ll take some questions from the audience. A girl asks E-Squared’s Mom if he had any nicknames. She said she used to call him something in Spanish that had to do with his forehead. (Okay.) Someone asks Jacko’s Mom if he was good at getting girls. She says that Jacko was never really interested in girls because he was so focused. Girls were a distraction according to Jacko. (But hasn’t he been with Janie since like the beginning of time or something?) A girl asks Mrs. Angel about a sacrifice or something. She says the biggest sacrifice is how much she misses Ash. The show is over!
Now we’re in the green room and T-Rev is still whining about his missing doll. Dan’s Mom hugs him. Then Dan says “I don’t care what you say Mom, you love my singing. We all know it. When it was quiet in the house you missed me. Yeah, ya did.” (OMG!!! Dan is soooo cute.) Dan, T-Rev, and E-Squared start singing the gospel song again and Dan says he used to go “Second verse same as the first.” Suddenly there’s footage from an actual O-Town concert. (I believe it’s the NY one because it looks like the video.) The boys are singing “All or Nothing” and a voice-over of Jacko tells us that it is dedicated to their Moms and all Moms. This goes on for awhile. (Ash has on that flag shirt where the flag is backwards. That shirt always concerns Ica because she wonders if Ash put the shirt on backwards or the people who made the shirt were stupid.) Voice-over of E-Squared telling that they owe their success to their fans and that their biggest fans are their Moms.
Next week….Makes absolutely no sense. Something about a fan diary and then some girl is taking a picture of Ash’s underwear. Then another girl is sitting on a bed with Ash and he wants to kiss her. And then T-Rev kisses some girl and video tapes it. I’m soooo lost. Hope you enjoyed this recap. Please post reviews…I always appreciate feedback. Until next week…
