“Making the Band” Season 3: Episode #6

DISCLAIMER: Okay, here's the deal with the recaps. I use humor in them...the humor is just my opinion so I don't expect you to agree with everything I write. Remember that if you are going to be offended because I make fun of O-Town DO NOT READ MY RECAPS! There are plenty of sites that give just straight recaps. You have been warned so please don’t send reviews saying that you are offended. Thank you!! (In case you’re confused….Ash:Ashley, Jacko: Jacob (this is a reference to Michael Jackson, I’m NOT making fun of him! Well…nevermind) T-Rev: Trevor, E-Squared: Erik, and I call Dan, Dan.)
Oh man. My mind is still trying to comprehend what I just saw. Okay, we start by watching clips from the Brit tour. (Dan is sooo cute!) Then we meet two girls named Brandi and Thais. They claim they are two of the biggest O-Town fans. The girls arrive at MTV headquarters and sit down with two other women. Brandi and Thais are going to do something for fan diary at mtv.com. (Has anyone ever heard of this?) The girls are going to spend three days with O-Town and dig up some dirt. (Didn’t we do that last week?) Apparently this is every girls dream. Everyday the girls will have a mission and when the mission is accomplished they will get a new mission. “The fans are counting on you.” One of the women says. (We are?) Brandi asks when this starts and the woman says immediately. The girls then look at each other and do this fake giggle thing.
Now we’re boarding the bus in Minneapolis, MN. The first mission is to break the ice. Mike Morin explains what the girls are doing there and then they are introduced to the guys. Jacko looks annoyed (Actually I can’t blame him this time.) and Ash tells us the girls are pretty cute. Mike Morin mumbles something about on the bus and Ash is like me busa su busa. The girls can’t believe this is happening… it doesn’t feel real. One of them tells us that most fans don’t get to do this. (Really? I thought all O-Town fans got to stalk them for three days with a video-camera and ride the tour bus!) The girls say they want to play a game. Dan says he hopes they don’t have to play spin the bottle. (MMMDANMILLERMMM!) Actually their going to play a game the girls made called ‘Getting to Know O-Town.’ (HEY! I made a game called Boy Band Land. Think they’d play with me?) Ash rolls the dice and he lands on a challenge which he doesn’t like the sound of. (Wonder how his wife is doing….heehee) Ash must sing part of his favorite song. Dan tells him to represent. (I love Midwest Ghetto!!) Ash sings a song that I don’t know…it went kinda like this “Even though the moment passed me by.” (Maybe one of y’all know what it is.) One of the girls says it’s like a private concert. (Yeah, Ash singing part of a non-O-Town song is really a concert.) Mike Morin says Ash gets a sandwich. Then we see them all clapping and shouting money. (I scared.) The next question is for Dan. If he had no money and was starving what would he steal? Dan says he would never steal and would find a way to get the money. Then T-Rev sticks his fingers close to Dan’s eyes and says that Dan has stolen from him before. (Does he mean when Dan supposedly jacked his socks or whatnot?) Jacko’s turn. What is his greatest virtue or biggest flaw? He responds that his greatest virtue is his biggest flaw…his stubbornness. Jacko is pleased with his angst-filled answer and smiles. Then someone asks how the two girls pick up guys. (At first I thought the guys were still playing and I was scared.) Then E-Squared is like do the strut, you know the walk. The girls are like “If O-Town wants to see us walk we will” or something to that effect. Then T-Rev runs over to Ash and says something about how guys check out walks and then they make incomprehensible noises. Then Brandi does some hoochie walk. The mission is accomplished.
The girls get to go to the Milwaukee, WI concert and they get to go BACKSTAGE and ‘everything’!! (No, I thought they’d make them sit in the nose bleed section.) Mission number two is to find something personal backstage. Mike Morin hands the girls their ‘laminents’ and tells them the backstage rules. Don’t go near Brit’s dressing room, don’t go on or under the stage, they can’t go to the Brit or O-Town soundcheck, they can’t wander around the venue, and they are only allowed to go into and out of O-Town’s dressing room if they are escorted. He tells them not to get thrown out. (Wow, backstage sure sounds like fun. *roll my eyes*) The girls go into the dressing room and we find Dan signing and Jacko playing the guitar. They quickly leave when the stalkers…I mean fans walk into the room. They say hi to Jacko and he ignores them. The girls now have video-cameras. They need to find something personal and hope to do so since the boys aren’t there. They check out their clothes because the fans want to see them or something. (The theme music to ‘Inspector Gadget’ plays. Youngstown? Where?) Then they go into the bathroom and there is hair all over the floor. One of them is like someone must have gotten a haircut. They decide it was E-Squared. (How they came to this conclusion I’m not sure since E-Squared is BALD!) Then Thais says she wants to sell the hair and they begin to pick some of it up. Intense close-up of Thais saying “I have Erik’s hair.” (Scary.) Mission accomplished. Mission number three: get the guys to show some skin. The girls start taking shots of packages of underwear. Then one of them asks which member wears animal print underwear. (Do we really want to know?) They say the underwear in the packages doesn’t count. They want to see what O-Town looks like in their underwear and they have a plan. (I’m sure it’s brilliant.)
Shot of a full moon. The time is now 7:06 a.m. (So why did we see a shot of a full moon?) Thais knocks on T-Rev’s door and we hear him say “Oh, are you kidding me?” Now it’s 7:13 a.m. and she knocks on Ash’s door. He actually answers it, but damn does he look tired. She’s like hey and he says hey and then she says that she’s sorry to bother him, but she needs something for the fan diary. Cut to a commercial. And we’re back and they play the same clip with Ash over again. Then she adds that the fans want to know what the guys sleep in. Now it’s 7:22 a.m. and we’re at Dan’s door. He sticks his head out and wants to know why Thais couldn’t ask him this at a better time…like in the afternoon. Then Thais gets denied by T-Rev. At 7:24 a.m. we’re at E-Squared’s door and…no response. 7:27 a.m. with a knock on Jacko’s door. He screams “GO AWAY!” (For some reason I find that hilarious.) Back to T-Rev who says “Ohhh…a little peep show.” Now to Ash who shows us his Canada boxers, or as he calls them drawers, that a fan gave him. (So Ash will show us his Canada boxers but MTV won’t show ‘MTB’ in Canada…where’s the love?) Back to Jacko who screams to look at the sign. (It says ‘Do Not Disturb.’) Dan then tells us he doesn’t sleep in anything and he’s going back to sleep. T-Rev informs us he doesn’t wear underwear and he sleeps naked. Then he sticks out his leg and it appears that he is in fact naked. (Nauseous feeling.) Then he slams the door in Thais face. (heehee.) Mission accomplished.
Mission number four: follow the guys to a photo-shoot. The photo-shoot is for ‘Tiger Beat’ magazine. Jacko looks angsty and E-Squared keeps flashing gang signs. Now Ash is explaining to Thais that sometimes photo-shoot can take an hour or all day. He asks to see the camera and then takes it from her and says it looks complicated and feels heavy. (Ash never fails to crack me up.) Then he’s all like “Uh-oh” and starts following Thais around with the camera. He is running from her singing “I’ve got the camera.” (Reminds me of the flowered shirt song E-Squared sang.) Ash then says since he showed Thais his Superman underwear (When did that happen?) she should show him her Superwoman underwear. She says no and Ash is like why because your underwear is lacey and private or something. Then Ash continues running with Thais chasing him and she screams the greatest line of the entire episode “The fans want to see you’re underwear! They don’t care about me.” (Umm…yeah I’ve often said to Ica if only I could see Dan in his underwear. Who are these girls?) Thais says Ash is “sooo funny.”
Now we’re on the bus and Dan and T-Rev have stolen the camera from the girls. Dan wants to waste film so he just sits there. T-Rev asks what he thinks of the girls in general…no answer because the scene is then cut to T-Rev asking him about the story of his underwear and Dan says that is personal business. Shot of T-Rev with Dan saying T-Rev doesn’t wear underwear. Then Dan gets way excited and says they should do double time. Intense close-up of T-Rev and Dan talking about different types of underwear. According to the guys it doesn’t matter where you get your underwear. (Although T-Rev seems fond of FTL’s or something. Maybe Will Smith wears them.) T-Rev reveals that Dan wears boxer briefs and Dan says that’s all you need to know and says to back up. Mission accomplished.
Now we’re in Chicago, IL. The girls are backstage and E-Squared is showing the girls his clothes and shoes. One of them asks what size the shoes are. E-Squared says size eleven. The girls give each other a funny look. (I’m sure y’all know the saying about shoe size…big shoe size equals big socks. heehee.) Mission number five is to get to know Jacko. Jacko is sitting on a couch playing the guitar and the girls walk over to him and he actually acknowledges them this time. Then they are like we’re going to talk to Jacko. First question they ask is about his perfect girl. After like twenty minutes he says she’s blond and in San Diego. He’s like I have a girlfriend back home who is my best friend. (He says this like we don’t know about Janie or something…or maybe he was trying to be funny.) Then they ask him to describe a fond love memory. He says no. MISSION FAILED!! The girls actually get to go to the soundcheck this time because according to Dan “Me stagea…something.” The girls walk into the arena and Dan shows them the stage and he has his arm around Brandi. (Man, I wan to be her shoulders.) We see the guys singing ‘Girl’ and ‘Love Should Be A Crime.” The girls sing along with “Love Should…” Jacko sings the last line with a really deep voice for no apparent reason. (Fun times.) Now I have no idea where they are but the girls found ‘real O-Town fans.’ (As opposed to the pretend ones?) These girls claim they are not ‘token O-Town fans.’ They don’t scream when they see the guys and they want to get to know them as friends. (Riight.) The girls then all share who they like…nothing too exciting. We see a clip of the ‘Girl’ performance which was extremely edited because the song is out of order. Ash says that song is about their favorite subject. It’s kinda boring, but thrusts and E-Squared riding an invisible horse make up for it.
The final mission is to get one of the guys to describe the perfect kiss. (Notice that the mission is to get them to DESCRIBE the perfect kiss. Remember this!) The girls want to take this mission a step farther. We’re still in Chicago and Thais kicks T-Rev’s door. She has chocolate cake with her. Brandi knocks on Ash’s door and he pretends he just woke up….umm…funny? She has chocolate cake too and Ash says she knows the way to a man’s heart. (Ash is a man?! JK!!!) Thais and T-Rev are lying on his bed and she asks him where he would take a girl on the first date. He tells her someplace where they could talk. Brandi asks Ash something similar and Ash says he’s never formally dated. (Then what do he and Shelli do?) Thais asks T-Rev what his favorite body part is. He says his face and then points to it in case Thais was confused. Ash tells Brandi that he talks too much. She agrees and then realizes she kind of insulted him and tries to take it back. He’s like ‘Sorry I didn’t know I was being a loudmouth” and something about how she put him in his place. Thais flips her hair around and asks T-Rev how he would ask a girl out. Cut to Ash pretending to ask Brandi to go see ‘Rent’ with him. She says she’d say yes. (Okay, I have no idea why I’m sharing this, but Ash looked sooo cute in that shot!!! I’d say yes.) Shot of T-Rev saying “Umm…so can I take you out sometime?” Then T-Rev says that’s how he always does it. T-Rev then proceeds to take the words out of my mouth “The very few times I’ve done it.” (T-Rev! You’re supposed to leave the sarcastic humor to me!) Ash then says that Brandi and Thais probably have secret plans going on right now and he doesn’t even realize it. Brandi tries to look innocent. Thais says the fans want to know how he kisses. (We do? Were any of you consulted?) T-Rev then proceeds to mack on the camera. (*shudder*) Ash says he doesn’t know how to show that. Brandi says he could kiss her because the fans would like that. (Riight, because I like it when strange girls kiss O-Town. Don’t you?) Ash says that would be embarrassing and Brandi looks offended. Thais says that if he kisses her the fans could live through her. (I think Thais make a good decision in picking T-Rev for this mission. The boy is sooo desperate she knew he’d probably kiss her.) T-Rev laughs. Ash says he’ll think about it…then he says okay. Then Brandi says “Oh well. No luck.” (Yes! Ash didn’t crack under the pressure.) T-Rev and Thais laugh some more and T-Rev sets up the camera like three inches away from their faces. He tells the fans watching that we must visualize this is a ‘first date kiss’ which is short. He’s like “This is for all y’all.” He kisses Thais and then says “Short, sweet, and to the point” and then he runs away. Thais says we would have loved it.
It’s all over!! The girls are going home. They thank MTV for the experience. In the hotel hall everyone hugs good-bye. Someone says “Oh, you’re leaving so soon?” (I have a feeling they couldn’t wait to rid themselves of these girls.) Then one second later E-Squared says “Oh, here’s your elevator.” (Hmm…eager to get rid of the girls?) The girls get into the waiting elevator and E-Squared asks them if they want a going away shot. The girls whip out their cameras and Ash says he hopes the fans learn something new about the guys, if that’s possible. Last shot of the girls saying “O-Town is awesome” in high-pitched voices. Now we’re on the bus and Mike Cronin (Yes!! I missed him.) asks if the girls wanted to know about the new album. Ash says they just wanted to know about hickeys. Mike Morin asks if they liked the girls and if they ‘hooked up.’ (People over the age of thirty shouldn’t be allowed to say ‘hooked-up’ or wear their hair in really long braids.) Then T-Rev says Thais said that the fans wanted to know how they kissed. Then Mike Cornin makes werid kissy faces. Dan looks over and says “Trevor?” T-Rev screams and says he didn’t want to but she reeled him in. Shot of Dan’s butt as he runs to the back of the bus. He says Thais complained the kiss was short. (She did?) Mike Morin says that maybe the kiss was just bad and if you don’t have the skill you shouldn’t put it out there. T-Rev informs us that he is indeed a good kisser because Thais told him so.
Next week… Ash is yelling or as he calls it ‘telling what happened.’ Dan tells us that they are at the breaking point. Then we see Ash screaming at a man and threaten to kill him and take his drugs. (At first I thought it was Ash’s turn for the fake anger moment like last week with E-Squared, but it’s some kind of acting thing.) Ash tells us he loves acting and then something about a lead role in a movie. The shoot would take five weeks and Mike Morin tells Ash he can’t leave for five weeks.
Well kids there you have it. I enjoyed how in this episode the guys didn’t even pretend they liked the girls. It was sooo grand. Props to Jacko and his angst…it made me smile in this episode because the girls really bugged me. At first I thought I disliked the girls because I was jealous, but then I realized that if I had to act that way in front of O-Town I’d rather not meet them. Also, according to everything you read about the third season “It’s all about the music.” Has anyone seen anything about the music this season? That’s what I thought.
