Chapter 6

“How does this look?” Makayla asked.

“Fine. Just like the other five outfits you tried on.” Chloe said.

Makayla sighed. “I’m losing my mind.”

“You said this wasn’t even a real date. Why are you so concerned with what you wear?” Chloe asked.

“I don’t know.” Makayla said sitting down on the couch.

Just then the doorbell rang.

“Here’s Ashley!” Chloe said gleefully.

“Man, you are scary today.” Makayla said heading to the door.

“Don’t I know it.” She replied.

Makayla opened the front door.

“Hey.” Ashley said.

“Hi Ashley.” Makayla said opening the door wider. “Come on in.”

“Hello Ashley.” Chloe said.

“Chloe.” Ashley replied. “How are you?”

“Fine.” She said. “So what exactly are you two crazy kids up to?”

“Nothing big.” Makayla said quickly.

Ashley looked confused but didn’t say anything.

“Well, I’ll leave and you can chill in here.” Chloe said getting up.

“That’s okay.” Makayla replied. “We’ll be in my room.”

Chloe’s eyes got wide. “Makayla! I thought we agreed that you weren’t allowed to have boys in your room.”

Makayla rolled her eyes. “No, I think you mean your room. Remember ‘the incident.’”

“Stop right there.” She said. “And you! Get that look off your face.”

“What?” Ashley asked.

“Onward Ashley.” Makayla said.

They walked down the hall and into her room.

“Whoa!” he said looking around. “Got a few candles?”

She shrugged. “Yeah, that’s my manager’s idea of a Christmas bonus…candles. Have a seat.” She said gesturing to the bed. Makayla settled into her desk chair.

“So why didn’t you tell Chloe that we were working on a song?” he asked.

“Because she doesn’t know I write songs.” Makayla told him.

“Does anyone?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Just you.”

“So it’s just a secret between you and me.” He said.

“Well, yeah. And I really like to keep it that way.” She replied.

“Cool.” He said.

Makayla started feeling a little nervous.

“So this song…” she started.

“Do people call you anything besides Makayla?” he asked.

“What? No, not really.” She replied. “Why?”

“Just wondering.” He said.

“Right. So, I really like the beginning, but it’s missing something.” Makayla said.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Well, usually when I hear a song I can visualize what’s happening. I can really feel what the writer meant. It’s like he had this experience and decided to share it with me. Know what I mean?” Makayla asked.

“I’m beginning to.” Ashley replied.
