Chapter Ten-Always You and I

**Flashback**

Mia impatiently tapped her hand against Emilie’s desk.

‘Where is she?’ Mia thought to herself.

She was supposed to meet Emilie at her desk at 8:00. It was now 8:15 and Emilie was nowhere in sight.

Lance rounded the corner in the long hallway heading toward Emilie’s desk. He saw Mia standing at there and said a quick prayer that this would work.

“Hello…Mia right?” he asked.

Mia quickly turned around.

“Yes, I mean hi, I mean yes I’m Mia.” She stuttered.

“Emilie wanted me to tell you that she’s stuck in a meeting so she won’t be able to meet you tonight.”

“Oh really? I wonder why she didn’t call me.”

“Things have been really hectic all day.”

“I can imagine. Well, thank you for the message…Lance right?”

“Yeah, I think I met you…”

“At that get together Emilie and JC had a few weeks ago.”

“Exactly. I’m on my way out…do you want me to walk you to your car? Never know what creeps are lurking around here in the dark.”

“Sure, that’s very nice of you.”

“Not a problem.” Lance said putting his hand on her back as they made their way.

“Very interesting.” She said.

“What is?”

“I’ve barely you known for ten minutes and you’re already putting the moves on me. If I didn’t know any better I’d say you’re trying to seduce me.”

“Oh…well is it working?”

Mia laughed as they stopped in front of her car.

“Maybe.”

“Well, than maybe I should try a little harder.”

“And how do you propose we do that?”

“Would you like to go out with me Friday night?”

Lance Bass wanted to go out with her?

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.”

“Than yes, I’d like that.” Mia said.

She got out a slip of paper and wrote down her number and address.

“Yes!” Emilie cried from inside the office where she was spying on the pair.

**End Flashback**

Lance walked into the cemetery and made his way down the path to where Mia was buried. He stood in front of the grave and placed fresh flowers on the ground. Two days after Mia started back on dialysis she caught pneumonia. Her body was too weak to fight off the infection and she passed away a week later.

“Hey Mia.” Lance said sitting down on the grass. “I know what you’re thinking…why is he sitting here talking to my grave? Totally cliché, but it makes me feel closer to you. I miss you so much. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about you. Heck, sometimes I even expect you to call me and tell me all about what your kids did during class. Or I wait for you to come over so we can watch ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ for the twentieth time and I can hear you oogle over Matt Damon. But I know that won’t happen and I have to move on but it’s really hard sometimes. When you died a little piece of me died too.”

He tried to blink back the tears that he could feel forming in his eyes.

“But I will love you for the rest of my life, no matter what. So just remember that okay?” Lance said standing up and running his hand over the stone.

He turned around and made the walk back to his car to go home…alone.
