“Then you’ll be the one in a hospital bed instead of me and I don’t want that.”
Mia had gone to see her regular doctor, but he insisted she go to the hospital for testing. So the next morning Lance took her to Orlando General for a CAT scan, some blood tests, as well as X-rays.
Lance shifted in the uncomfortable plastic chair.
“Are they ever going to tell us anything?”
“You know how hospitals work, talk to you for five minutes and then leave you alone for five hours.”
“Sounds like something Kara would say.”
“That’s because she works here, she knows it’s true.”
“Well, you think they could move a tad faster.”
Mia pulled their joined hands up to her face and kissed Lance’s hand.
“Just be patient.”
As if the doctor heard her the door opened.
“Hello Mia.” Dr. West said.
“So what’s going on?” Lance asked.
“To be honest, we’re not quite sure. I don’t want to say anything concrete until all the test results are back. Right now it appears as if the headaches are caused by stress. As for the general aches you described, you might just be working yourself too hard.” He said.
Lance breathed a sigh of relief.
“And you were worried.”
“Riight.” Mia said. “When will the results be back?”
“In two days. I’d like you to come back here on Friday. So you’re free to go now.”
“Thanks Dr. West.” Lance said shaking his hand.
“Thank you doctor.” Mia said sitting up.
The doctor left the room and Lance immediately wrapped his arms around Mia.
“See I told you everything was fine, there was no point in wasting all this time.” Mia said.
“Okay, okay. But don’t you feel better hearing the doctor say you’re fine? Because if something was wrong…I don’t know what I’d do.” he said.
Mia nodded.
“Well you don’t have to find out. Can we go now?”
“Whatever you want babe.” Lance said giving Mia a kiss.
Thursday…
“That was one scary movie.” Kara said turning off the DVD player.
“Yeah, it’s scary how bad that was.” Emilie commented.
Mia laughed.
“Okay mental note…never rent ‘Jeepers Creepers’ or any other B-rated horror movie.”
“Guess who I am?” Kara said making a face that resembled the main character of the movie.
“Darry, or maybe it was Larry.” Emilie said with a giggle.
“Now what should we do?” Mia asked.
“Watch ‘Christina’s House.’” Kara said.
“I thought I said no more B-rated horror flicks.” Mia said. “Seriously, now what?”
“I know. Let’s discuss the status of Kara and Chris’ relationship.” Emilie said.
“What relationship?” Kara asked.
“Exactly. Why don’t you ask him out?” Mia questioned.
“Just because I like him as more than a friend doesn’t mean he likes me that way.” Kara said.
“Ha! So you admit you like him!” Emilie squealed.
“How old are you? Twelve? Should I pass him a note and ask him to circle yes or no to see if he’ll go out with me?” Kara asked.
“That’s not a bad idea.” Mia said.
“Mia…” Kara warned.
“Fine, I guess we’ll just have to let nature take its course.” Mia said.
“Sucks doesn’t it?” Emilie asked.
***
“Can you hand me that paper?” Lance asked Chris.
“Huh?” Chris said distractedly.
“The paper next to you…can I have it?” Lance asked again.
“Sure.” He replied handing him a pencil.
“Thanks.” Lance said putting the pencil down. “What is up with you?”
“Nothing. Why?” Chris asked.
“Because you called me over here to help you look at new ideas you had for FuMan Skeeto and since I’ve been here you’ve barely said two words to me.” Lance replied.
Chris ran his hand over his face.
“It’s about a girl.”
“It always is.”
“Say hypothetically I really like her, but I’m not sure how she feels…what should I do?”
“Well, since we’re speaking hypothetically…I say you just go for it.”
“How did you ask Mia out?”
Lance smiled as he thought back to the first time he met Mia. She was coming to visit Emilie at Jive and he was immediately taken with her.
“First I asked Emilie who she was, then I introduced myself, and just went from there. You’ll have it easier since you already know Kara.”
“True, hey…who said the girl was Kara?” Chris asked.
“Oh I forgot, we’re speaking hypothetically.” Lance said rolling his eyes.
