Chapter Eight-There You Were

“Night.” Kara said as she walked into the house…and right into Mia.

“Who was that?” Mia asked trying to look past Kara’s shoulder.

“Ah! What is wrong with you?”

“You’re being so mysterious about this guy you keep going out with.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be in bed? You have to rest up before the surgery.”

Over the past three weeks Lance had undergone more tests to confirm that he would be able to donate his kidney to Mia. He also had to attend counseling sessions to make sure he was emotionally stable for this surgery. His family, Mia’s family, and all their friends were behind his decision 100%.

“I’m just so nervous.” Mia said. “It’s hard to sleep.”

“Everything will be fine.” Kara assured her.

“If my body rejects the kidney I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ll have to go back on dialysis and do the whole process over again when they find another donor. I don’t want to hurt Lance like that.”

“He’s knows the risks. Besides it’s not like he can blame you, it’s not your fault if your body rejects.”

“I know, but still.”

“Let’s talk about something else, this is depressing.”

“Okay, tell me who’ve you been going out with for the past few weeks.”

“Sure, his name is none of your business.”

The morning of surgery…

“This is it.” Mia said.

“Are you scared?” Lance asked.

“Terrified. You?”

“About the same.”

Mia and Lance were in the prep room getting ready to undergone the five hour surgery that would replace Mia’s infected kidney with Lance’s healthy one.

“Okay kids, here we go.” The anesthesiologist said walking into the room. Mia blew Lance a kiss.

“I love you so much.”

“I love you too baby.” He replied.

“Mia.” A faraway voice said.

Mia blinked her eyes.

“Mia. It’s over, wake up dear.” The voice said again.

Very slowly Mia opened her eyes and looked around the room.

“Where’s Lance?” she whispered.

“He’s in recovery.” The nurse said.

“Is he okay?”

“He’s fine, made it through with flying colors.”

“Good.”

“And you seem to be doing fine as well.”

Mia smiled, nodded, and drifted back to sleep.

The next morning…

Mia smiled as the nurse wheeled Lance into her room.

“They won’t let you walk either huh?” she asked.

“Nope, looks like they’ll be calling me wheels. How are you feeling?” he asked.

“Fine, a little tired. How about you?”

“Never been better.”

“Thank you. You gave me a second chance at life. I don’t know how to repay you.”

“Just live your life. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Have you seen the others?”

“Yeah, they’ve been by to see me.”

“So you heard about Kara and Chris?”

He nodded.

“Actually I knew.”

“What? How come you didn’t tell me? All that time I thought she was going out with some random guy and it was Chris!”

“Kara didn’t want you to know. They were so happy and they didn’t want to rub your face in it.”

“I suppose, but still, you always tell me everything.”

“From now on I will.”

“Forever?” she asked.

“Forever.” He promised.
