Epilogue

“Can you hand me that?” Johanna asked.

“Sure.” Dan replied handing her the box she had indicated.

“Doesn’t it seem like we just did this?” Johanna asked Dan.

“Yeah, it does.” Dan replied.

Johanna’s new place was ready and Dan was helping her move in. Johanna still didn’t understand what was wrong with Dan at the party, but she decided not to press the issue. He’d tell her when he was ready.

“Is it me or did my stuff multiple while I was living with y’all?” Johanna asked.

“It did. Ash cloned it all in the basement.” Dan replied.

“Ash? Does he know science?” Johanna asked in disbelief.

Dan busted out laughing.

“What?” Johanna asked.

“I just find it humorous that the part of the joke you don’t believe is the part that Ash knew how to use a cloning machine, not that your stuff was cloned.” Dan said.

“Maybe I need to sit down.” She said falling onto the couch.

“Good idea.” Dan said sitting down next to her. “Ow.”

“Are you okay?” she asked.

Dan nodded. “Yeah, I just sat on something.”

“That’s it, wreck the place.” Johanna said sarcastically.

Dan rolled his eyes. “It’s a photo album.”

Johanna took it out of his hands and opened it up. The first picture was of her and the guys the day they first met.

“Man, we look really different.” Dan commented.

“Indeed.” Johanna replied as she continued flipping through the pictures. “Remember this one?”

“How could I forget? Jacob didn’t exactly appreciate it when Grace threw him in the pool.” Dan said laughing as he turned the page. Suddenly he stopped.

“What?” Johanna asked.

The picture was of her and Dan at his 21st birthday party. He had completely forgotten he had kissed her before that fateful night. At the party Dan given Johanna a friendly kiss and someone had gotten it on film. This is where the infamous “Dan loves Johanna” conspiracy had started.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Johanna. I need to say something.” Dan said.

“Look, if this is about the kiss again…” Johanna started.

“Just hear me out okay?” Dan asked.

“Okay.” She replied.

Dan took a deep breath. “This is harder than I thought. Look Johanna, when you kissed me I kinda freaked.”

“Umm…Dan do I really want to know where this is going?” she asked.

Dan nodded. “I freaked because well…I was glad that you felt that way about me.”

“You were?” she asked.

“Yeah, I’ve felt that way since the day I met you. I just never had the guts to do anything about it so you never knew how I felt. I just figured you didn’t feel anything for me other than friendship so I didn’t want to put my heart on the line. I eventually got used to the idea that we’d never be more than friends. Then when you kissed me I was shocked and scared.”

“Scared?” she asked.

“Scared that if things didn’t work out between us I’d lose my best friend.” He replied.

“Oh.” She said.

“But now I realize how stupid I’ve been. I can’t go through life wondering about all the what ifs. It’s no way to live.” He said.

“You should have just told me how you felt. All of your mixed signals were really confusing me. It was like a riddle I couldn’t seem to figure out.” Johanna said.

Dan nodded. “I’m sorry.”

“So where do we go from here?” Johanna asked.

Dan tilted his head and looked into Johanna’s eyes.

“I think I have a pretty good idea.” He said as he leaned in and kissed her.

“AHHHHH!!!” a voice screamed causing Dan and Johanna to jump and break apart.

“He…she…you….him…Johanna and Dan are kissing!!!” Trevor screamed.

Suddenly what sounded like a herd of elephants came trampling into the room.

“Say what?!!” Grace exclaimed. “Finally! Took you two long enough.”

“Far too long.” Dan said.
