The song

Legal stuff: I know I do not own these characters. So don't sue me. I'm just playing. I do however own the characters Tommy and Sarah...so don't steal 'em! (Or else I'll bop you over the head with a live chicken!)

Author's notes: I was in the middle of writing another story when the Sabfic list (http://www.oocities.org/TelevisionCity/Lot/9961/enter.htm) offered a challenge to write a story based on a piece of piano music located at http://www.oocities.org/RainForest/Canopy/3651/og3_gm.mid. So I wrote this little piece of Q/W fluff in about an hour. It is set in the 4th season. I've edited it a bit and decided to send it to you guys. The first song that Wade sings is Sarah McLachlan's song "Do what you have to do." "Some genius" is a product of my own genius (or lack thereof). I later completed the full lyrics to this song. If you would like to read them, click here. Please send any feedback to wadesdiary@yahoo.com. Enjoy!

Part 1

She'd written it for him.

No one else had ever really mattered, much as she'd tried to delude herself of that fact. She loved him...even now. There it was, and that was all there was to it, for a little while anyway.

Wade pulled her trembling fingers back from the small piano and sighed.

"You've got to stop torturing yourself honey," Sarah said from the doorframe.

Wade looked up at her friend through her tears and smiled sadly.

"I know...you don't need to give me the 'you've got to move on' lecture again Sar," she said softly.

Sarah sighed. They had been through so much in the past two years. Prisoners of the Kromagg breeding facility, they'd been tortured, prodded....violated. Sarah cringed at the horrible memories. But six months ago they'd finally made their escape. It was Wade's idea, and she'd been willing to die trying. They wanted Christina to try to get away with them too, but she had the baby, and she was separated from them right before the transport. Sarah thought wistfully of her friend. She hoped that she was ok.

They'd managed to fool their Kromagg captors into thinking they were taking the sedatives forced upon them. In reality they would swallow, then gag them up. When they could anyway.

Wade had snuck into the control room, stolen a timer, and corrupted the manta ship systems so they would telepathically be linked to herself or Sarah. But they knew they'd have to be on the next transport if they were going to be able to control the ship.

Luck was with them. They both were transferred that morning.

When the ship rose, they'd concentrated, utilizing the skills that they'd picked up in the camp. The ship had careened violently, finally crashing. In the confusion of the crash, she and Wade had escaped. They'd slid around a bit until they they felt sure the Kromaggs had lost the trail, and then settled down.

Now they lived here, on an earth they'd nicknamed "Fun World," because it had an abundance of amusement parks and joyrides. Even Hollywood was one big theme park. It wasn't a bad place to call home. But Sarah knew Wade couldn't let go. Couldn't let go of the man who had, for all intents and purposes as far as she was concerned, abandoned Wade. She clenched her fists. Sometimes she really hated Quinn Mallory...and she'd never even met him.

"Honey," she said softly. "Save some of that energy for the gig tonight ok?" She worried about Wade. They'd formed the band to make money at first, but they'd actually started to make a name for themselves lately. Sarah didn't want Wade's pain to stop them from being all they could be. She turned and left the room breathing heavily. She had to go to the bar and set up the instruments.

Wade sighed again. She didn't want to think about the Dimensions' gig tonight. It was at some hotel bar downtown...the Sandler? No...the Chandler, that was it. Whatever. She didn't care. She began to play once more. This time she sang a song along with her piano movements.

"What ravages of spirit, conjured this tempestuous rage?

Created you, a monster, broken by the rules of love....

And fate has led you through it,

You do what you have to do...

And fate has led you through it,

You do what you have to do....

And I have the sense to recognize,

That I don't know how to let you go...

Every moment mocked with apparitions of your soul.

I'm ever swiftly moving, trying to escape this desire...

Yearning to be near you, I do what I have to do.

Yearning to be near you, I do what I have to do.

And I have the sense to recognize that I don't know how to let you go.

I don't know how to let you go.

Slowly moving, burning hot and burning slow...

Deeper then I'm shaken by the violence of only you...

I know I can't be with you...

I do what I have to do.

I know I can't be with you...

I do what I have to.

And I have the sense to recognize, that I don't know how to let you go.

I don't know how to let you go."

Wade was immersed in the song, her fingers flying, her thoughts only on him. So many times they'd been there for each other. So many times they'd saved each other. What had changed him so? What had ripped him from her?

She cried softly as her fingers ran over the keys.

Part 2

Quinn sat in Chandler's bar, absently stroking his hair. They'd landed on this world this morning, and Remmy, Colin and Maggie had almost immediately named it "Fun World."

They were off at an amusement park right now. But Quinn didn't feel up to it. He was feeling depressed. It was hard to let go and have fun when you knew that you'd caused such pain to others. So he'd stayed in the room that morning, reading the tattered pages of a journal.

No one knew he had it. No one knew he read it. And no one knew how he felt.

He buried his emotions deep inside, knowing that if he let them out at all...he simply wouldn't be able to cope. Not with her loss. Of all of them, she was the one he couldn't bear to lose. And she was the one who had been taken from him. He might even have thought it ironic if it hadn't been the hell he lived through everyday.

"It's my fault. It's my fault. It's my fault."

The words were a constant echo in his brain. A never ending conundrum shouting at him in anger and hate. Her voice in accusation. "Why Quinn? why did you leave me to die with the Kromaggs? I loved you."

He buried his head in his arms, not caring that people in the cafe were staring at him.

"Oh Wade..." he said softly, tears falling on the countertop. "Please forgive me...I don't know how to find you."

"Some genius," said a voice over on the stage, startling him out of his self-pity. For a moment he thought she was talking to him, but then realized the petite young blond woman was talking to a man who was setting up musical equipment.

"Yeah...Some genius would be a good opening number I think." Sarah said to Tommy as they checked the amps.

"But really it's up to Wade. She's been in a zone all day."

Quinn stared sharply at the name and listened to the conversation.

Tommy looked up, interested. He was the drummer for the Dimensions and any mention of Wade was of interest to him. She was so great, so talented, so...obsessed with someone else. He blew out his breath heavily and said casually (he hoped), "Oh yeah? She come up with some new material?"

Sarah pushed her short blond hair out of her eyes and said, "Yeah...it's a piano piece. Probably for her solo performance at the end of the show. It's good but..." she bit her lip.

"But, you're worried about her." Tommy finished. "She still obsessing over that jerk? When is she gonna realize he's never gonna come to her?" And then in a softer tone, "I could be there for her..."

"I know," Sarah said firmly. "But you know she's not ready."

"I know," Tommy agreed sadly.

Quinn's heart was beating wildly in his chest. Could it be? Could it be his Wade?

But then common sense kicked in. C'mon Quinn...she's just a double. Your Wade is probably dead...remember? Just a double, just a double, just a double.

But then he saw a flyer advertising the name of the band that was playing tonight.

"Dimensions," he read aloud.

"Oh my god...I have to find the others." Quinn said in a whisper and hurried out of the bar.

--------------------------

Remmy, Maggie and Colin hadn't had such a good slide in ages.

They'd gone on rides, played games (Maggie winning a stuffed toy at the shooting gallery) and eaten like pigs!

"I still don't quite grasp where the cotton is in the candy," said Colin as he stuffed a sticky morsel on his mouth.

Remmy and Maggie cracked up. Still laughing, Remmie slapped him on the back "Aw geez farm boy, you're killing me. Just eat it ok?"

"I will be happy to," responded Colin. "It is...awesome? That's the correct word, right?"

"C'mon guys," said Maggie, laughing again. "Let's go back to the hotel. I'm beat!" Besides, she thought quickly, she wanted to brag to Quinn about her new stuffed tiger.

They found Quinn in the room, clutching a flyer in his hands.

"Remmy...Remmy. You won't believe it!" he said, handing the crumpled paper over.

Remmy looked at the paper. It was an advertisement for a band that was playing tonight at the bar downstairs. "Dimensions huh?" he said. "Maybe I can join 'em for a set or two. Show 'em a real professional..." He looked closer.

"Oh my god...Wade?"

Quinn nodded his head in delight, while Colin and Maggie looked on, stunned.

"Isn't that?" Colin began to whisper in Maggie's ear, but was stopped by a sharp elbow to the ribs. "Ow!" he said loudly.

"Shut up." Maggie hissed.

But Quinn and Remmy weren't paying attention to Maggie and Colin's antics. They were too busy saying things like..."Do you think?" and "Could it be?"

"Ahem guys," Maggie said, clearing her throat. "hate to be the rain on your parade here, but don't you think it's her double?" She stared purposefully over at Quinn.

Quinn didn't even notice. "I don't care...I have to know...have to see her."

Maggie shook her head. I should've known, she thought angrily. "What if she doesn't know you Quinn? You gonna just march over there and attack her?"

Quinn paused. Maggie did have a point.

"No," he said slowly. "We'll watch her set tonight. We can try to talk to her afterwards."

Part 3

The bar was crowded when the foursome found their way in. They took a table at the back with a good view of the stage.

Suddenly, the house lights went down. People started chanting.

"Dimensions! Dimensions! Dimensions!"

A single spotlight came on, illuminating a petite young woman with close cropped red hair. She was sitting at a piano.

She began to play.

"Oh god...Wade..." said Quinn. It had to be her! He just knew it!

She started to sing.

"You caught me up

In your web of lies

The trickery

was in your eyes.

I walked with you

through places unseen

You held my hand

You made me scream

Some genius...

Some genius...."

And the lights lit up the stage as the rest of the band began to play.

Quinn took in a sharp breath. The hate in those words!

Several songs later, he was no less stunned. The sheer pain that Wade had gone through was recorded in her songs. Her love for him, her time in captivity. All of their adventures, chronicled for this listening mass. The words proved to him without a doubt that the woman pouring her heart out in her voice was definatley his Wade.

"I'd like to introduce the band to you," Wade said softly. "This is Tommy on drums." Tommy smiled at her and did a rousing drum solo. "Sarah on guitar." Sarah obliged the crowd as well. "Bennish on bass." Bennish played a bit, bowed and said "Hey dudes." into the mike.

Quinn chucked at seeing his old friend in a band. With the excitement of seeing Wade, he hadn't noticied him until that moment.

"And I'm Wade," she finished simply. The crowd roared. Quinn's heart rose to his throat.

"This last one's for Quinn," she continued. "I wrote it for you, and I still love you, wherever you are. I wish I'd been able to tell you that."

And she began to play the new song.

The haunting strains touched Quinn's heart, and he couldn't control himself anymore. He rushed at the stage.

"Wade!"

She looked up from the keys and saw...no...it couldn't be him....could it?

"Quinn?" she said into the mike. The crowded parted for him to pass and a bouncer helped him on stage. Wade rose from her stool.

"Quinn...is it ...is it...really you?"

Tears streamed down her face, and she saw him smile. Then he rushed over to her, and grabbed her in his arms.

"I'm so sorry Wade...so sorry. I love you...I always have. I didn't know how to find you...." The words were tumbling out, and he was lost in the feel of her, lost in her arms.

"Oh Quinn, it is you!"

He silenced her words with a kiss.

And the audience cheered.
