:: So 1999 ::
The other day I was walking the halls of Tel Aviv University's Department of Computer Science. The department's bulletin
boards have lately become the city's largest collection of "Wanted" ads. It seems as if the whole place is no more than a list of job opportunities and a group of people trying to
be able to apply to them.
One of the ads that caught my attention read: "Don't say we didn't tell you! We are a young start-up company and we think
that we have found the 'next big thing' on the web. If you know <insert list of popular programming languages here>, you are welcome to join us."
Naive? I thought so myself. Actually, the first thing that crossed my mind was: "This is so...1999". In the fast-moving
world of Internet trends, we seem to grow wiser every year, and this kind of enthusiastic no-marketing-scheme no-money no-business-plan we-have-an-idea kind of optimism seems
outdated.
A mere twelve months ago it might have looked plausible to some, but even Israeli investors have learned some lessons since
(or have they?), and news spreads fast. These young people will probably learn their lesson this year.
