:: Deja Vu ::

Deja.com, formerly known as dejanews.com, is having a deja vu.

The site, which in 1996 was the number one destination for Usenet followers, has become a "mega portal for something". And apparently, this didn't work. So deja is moving slowly back to its roots and they are not the only ones. Google is doing the same thing to search engines, and with great success. Providing users with a dedicated search interface, that reminds me of what AltaVista used to be before the "Portal mania" begun.

And why is this important to the people here in the Wadi?

Because in the past couple of months I've met quite a few entrepreneurs here that think the other way around. They start with a simple mission, a dedicated service, an idea. Then they find it might not be so attractive, or that there is no business there. So they expand (in their mind) to other services, thinking that down the road they will capitalize on their original offering. They won't. The lessons were learnt.

So the next time you hear people around you "expanding", it's a sign for you to focus on finding another Start-Up, to work for, invest in, talk about.
