:: Geek Time - The Rebuttal ::

Previously on this mailing list, it has been stated by another writer "It's geek time".

The reasoning was that the good old Jewish mother doesn't want for her son to be a doctor or a lawyer anymore; she wants him to be a computer expert. That's where the money is, and according to that column - Geeks are at the top of the social food chain these days.

I beg to differ; or rather I want to point out to a small, yet nagging refinement on that statement. I believe it's past Geek Time. It's now the time for what I call "Nouveau-Geeks". The old geeks were the ones like you and me. They played with Commodore-64's and ZX-81 Spectrum Sinclair's as kids. They still like to write HTML using Notepad, and treat Linux as their Tamaguchi. They actually know what a socket is and here's a news flash people - They're passe.

The geeks have now turned to the blue-collar caste of the industry. Oh Sure, Well-compensated blue-collar workers, but they're not the leaders anymore. Today - We have the Nouveau-Geeks, which are the fast-talking-tie-wearing-good-looking entrepreneurs.

The geeks were the social rejects at high school, and for a short while they ruled the world. But today the popular kids caught on to the drift. So they go to business school, take some courses in Information Systems, come up with the ideas, recruit the necessary geeks to implement it and make the big bucks.

Am I bitter? Sure. For a while, we had the world at the palm of our hand. Not anymore. Natural order has been restored.
