:: To the moon and back ::

The Apollo 13 movie ends up with Tom Hanks voice doing Jim Lovell and saying: "I look up at the moon, and wonder: When will we be going back? And who will that be?"

Yep. When and who, and may I add, if.

Working in the Industry I sometimes look up at the moon, and wonder: Where are we going now?

A lot has changed since we raced to the moon. The people changed, the technology changed, hell even the "we" changed. "We" raced to the moon as humans, "we" now race in the name of us (and the Wadi). And the race is on. On in a very specific sector of the Wadi, a sector that most people name in a simple name - Optics.

Wadi companies with names like Trellis Photonics, Native Networks, Chiaro, Memlink, are all at the race with, who know how many others in Bangalor, Boston and the all mighty Valley. Companies valued at tens and hundreds of millions of dollars, burning on their way not tons of liquid hydrogen but tons of cash, aiming not at the moon but at the billion dollar mark and the Pure-Nano-Optical-Switch-Router-Connector-Whatever.

And I look at the moon, at my TV screen and my PC screen and wonder. What good will these entire networks do if all they will deliver is faster trading data, a web cam feed from downtown LA and an enhanced video-on-demand version of the movie Apollo 13.

I for one want more. I want something interesting and exciting to watch. I'll take it at half screen, 2 frames per second, 10 minute delay if it is worth my time. Just give it to me.

A man on the moon would be a nice feed - don't you think?
