:: Founder Clause Test ::
I’m not addressing all of my audience today, just those of you planning to go work for a Start-Up company at its very first days. Meaning, those who plan to take the
position of employee #1 to #5 in a Start-Up someday in the future. All the rest can skip this
one.
Remember the Pizza test? The one in which we easily found what the founders really think of their employees? Well, this one
is kind of the same only you need a poker face to play it. Here’s the
thingy.
After you discuss with the founder the great future of the Company, agree that this is a Billion-dollar play and shake hands on the fraction of a percent in stock options. After,
you summarize all the details of the salary, the benefits and your responsibilities, ask for one more thing – ask the founder to add a clause to the employment agreement
stating your salary will never be lower than his or hers. Now watch the face, and wait for the
reaction.
I
don’t think I need to go any further. Any resentment of any kind is a sure sign that this entrepreneur has a safety
net.
Guess who’s employment agreement is paying for
it?
