:: First Look :: Zend ::
You know how I occasionally find a Start-Up and just throw my rage on it, well this time its different. And it is because Zend is different. And it is
worth admiring.
I'm sure most, if not all, of you, never heard the names Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans. I'm also sure most of you wouldn't bother your mind with what
PHP is and why more than a million Internet servers are running it. That's OK. It shows most of you are normal.
To make this as short as possible, PHP is an Open Source scripting language and engine Andi and Zeev rewrote while at the Technion. Now, as a Wadi
Start-Up, Zend is offering various development and deployment tools targeted at those who use PHP. Obviously the tools are based on an expertise only those who are intimate with
the source code can have.
Being an Open Source play is something uncommon in our corner of the world. And it is left to see if Zend management and investors can build a solid
business model around it.
Wait.
It actually doesn't matter.
Why?
Remember You-Know-Who? They didn't have a business model, just software a lot of people found valuable. And much like You-Know-Who, Zend is doing
another thing that unfortunately became uncommon in our corner of the world - it is providing usable software.
And this I like.
And that's enough.
