:: RichFX
Retaliation ::
Just a month ago I brought RichFX from the
abyss, to give a not so very favorable review of what
they do, and suddenly a group of investors are investing
a reported $33M in the company and valuating it at over
$100M.
This is a direct assault on my self
esteem. Those investors are willing to put money in just
to prove me wrong. A bold move. I will retaliate at the
time and place I will find appropriate, meaning, right
now.
OK. Let's dig deeper into what the company
is doing.
RichFX is offering a much-improved way of
creating an online storefront using 3D animation. The
render, that is the software that enables the display of
such, image is bundled into the new versions of the very
popular RealPlayer by RealNetworks. So basically the
software will enhance e-commerce and the distribution
side is covered.
Good.
Not so.
Boo.com, Furniture.com, MotherNature.com,
Pets.com, Garden.com, Amazon.com, oops, Amazon is still
alive but all the rest are dead, should all have been
RichFX potential customers. They won't. Loads of other
potential customers are packing up and leaving town. In
essence RichFX market segment is the fastest shrinking
market segment of all.
And though this is a good argument, there
is one more thing I find most disturbing. Is it really
the enhanced storefront that was missing? Was it the
lack of 3D effects that prevented those companies from
turning a profit? Can looks really take you all the
way?
I don't think so. But I have no control of
what is going on. And if some hypervalueted acquisition
comes up, I'll just do what we do best in this
country.
I will retaliate at the time and place I
will find appropriate.
