:: In-between Business Models
::
I have been talking to quite a lot of
companies lately, and there's a new phrase that popped
to mind.
Many of those companies are at a similar
stage in their life. First they got some money. Then
they got some programmers, and then they made a demo.
Then they got more money, more programmers, and released
a version of their thing. Then suddenly someone asked
them (that usually happened in April, 2000) what their
business plan was.
So they made up a plan and made another
product and failed. This thing just didn't happen. All
the millions of PowerPoint dollars turned into zero of
the green, crisp type.
So then they repositioned themselves,
their business plan. But this time the money people were
more stubborn. They actually looked at the business
plan. And the young entrepreneurs, not so young anymore,
needed to make another business model.
So, today, many companies when you ask
them what their business model is, they answer:
"Look, first we thought this one would work, but
then we saw that we should go this way. And now, since
we had that great brainstorm this morning, we will go
for the WAP-preinstalled-client-royalties
model."
If this was girlfriends, boyfriends, or
jobs we were talking about, the politically correct (and
much cynically abused) phrase would be "In-between
jobs", or "In-between boyfriends".
So why not say: "We're in-between
business models right now".
I plan to use this phrase all the
time.
