:: The Recruitment Paradox
::
My humble self being on the jobhunt these
days, I am going from interview to boring interview
(Guys!!! I *know* how the virtual function table in C++
works! And if I didn't, I would have learned it by now,
since you're *all* asking me the same question! How dumb
do you think we are?).
Ok, so I'm looking through the papers for
jobs, and I run into those advertisements by headhunter
companies, like CPS or JobInfo or HitechJob or whatever,
and they all have the same message:
"Come ON! 'High-tech man'! Quit your
boring job! We have something better for you. Only dorks
stick around where they work. Come to the witch's house
and get a better job. Better. Quit. Now. Come
ON!"
So let's say you buy that shit. And you
actually go to CPS, or JobInfo, or whatever. And you sit
down.
The thing they're most interested in is
always: Why did you quit this job in 1996? And how about
that one here in 1999? And why didn't you stay with this
company in 2000? Why do you keep quitting companies all
the time?!? For god's sake! Be a more stable person! How
can we sell you like this?
And you want to say: "But...but...but
you said on your poster...you said I should quit my
job...I thought that was the cool thing to do. The right
thing to do".
Forget about it. There's nothing you can
do, amigo. It's a lose-lose situation. You should always
be switching companies, but you should be sure to be a
very loyal employee. A very loyal switcher.
Welcome to the recruitment paradox.
