:: How to treat your employees - Part I ::

Recently I spent some quality time with a development manager of a high-tech company located in the far north (Yes, there are high-tech companies outside Herzliya and Atidim, honest to god). It didn't take long for the conversation to turn to the difficulty of hiring employees and retaining them.

He told me this small tale to try and demonstrate the problem: Let's say you want to hire someone, or keep him on. You sit down and negotiate the terms. Now this person, let's call him X, looks around at his friends, most of them work in the same industry:

Friend A, earns 28K a month, but has a boring job.

Friend B, earns 'only' 15K, but works for this amazing startup where its really interesting.

Friend C, earns 15K, but gets a car, and has a free coca-cola machine in the cafeteria.

Now, Mister or Miss X looks around and comes to you saying: I want 28K, a challenging project, a car and a free coca-cola machine.

It's called "Maximization of Terms", and more than anything - it's going to ruin the high-tech industry. So, how do we keep those demanding employees - Next time.
