:: 19-Inch ::
I wish. I don't have the 19-Inch thing.
However, for those who do, the next year is going to be
bright, or at least not as dark as it is going to be for
all the other guys.
For some historical reason, it was decided
that the standard rack into which IT equipment is to fit
in should be 19-Inch wide. Servers, and other types of
networking equipment are mounted into the rack, stacked
one on top of the other, filling up more and more rooms
around the world. And though a variety of things with
different price tags and different functions can be
installed into the rack, they all have one thing in
common - they are the true building blocks of networks.
19-Inch is the basic characteristic of an Infrastructure
company.
Radware is a classic example of a 19-Inch
company. So are Gilian, Spearhead, Whale, eXalink and
many others.
The cool thing about 19-Inch companies is
the business model. 19-Inch things sell for 5 to 6
dollar digits. 100 installations make the company a
valid business, 1000 makes it a valuable one, more can
make it a giant. Margins are usually good too. 19-inch
companies usually give in-a-box out-of-the-box
solutions.
Now why am I telling you this?
For two reasons.
First so that you'll know what to ask next
time you hear the word infrastructure (and youll here it
a lot), and second, so you will know that size does
matter.
Two tips to keep you worm in the cold
season ahead.
