:: Job Hunt :: Which way to go?
::
As many of you know (well, I'm sure at
least three of you must know), I was out job hunting
over the last few weeks. You know. C++ programmer,
several years of experience. *I* was the one doing the
interviewing.
Or so I thought.
Some companies not only asked me
frequently and firmly how the virtual function table
works (see Related Links at bottom), but also insisted
on me doing a written exam as well. Like a student. The
insolence. As I said, we all know all the
"riddles". Everyone does.
But then, there are the other kind of
companies. These don't care about tests, and go only
with friendly recommendations. Like, "David sent
me". "Oh, David? Ok, sign here, take the money
and the cell-phone and pick up your PC at the end of the
hall. What education did you take, by the way?"
Actually, I don't know. Some swear on the
"picky exam"-approach and say there's no other
way, other would defend the "army buddy"
approach with their lives. Both have their reasoning.
And also, both can fail. I know too many losers who can
pass the tests, and too many "good friends"
who can't really code.
So, I personally still haven't decided
which way is the right way to go, so I say: Take the Zen
train. Let yourself be taken. Don't try to figure it all
out, and most of all - trust your gut feeling. That way
at least you won't feel too stupid when it all comes
falling down and you're stuck with a nightmare of an
employee. (That would be me).
