:: Job Hunt :: The Only Way Is Up
::
My last job wasn't actually that of a
simple coder. I worked at a small start-up, and thus was
eventually promoted to be a Vice President. Yes, yes.
You may call me "Your Honor".
Alas, this didn't
prove to be such a clear advantage when I was looking
for my regular C++ programming job last month. For some
reason, no-one would believe I would actually go back to
the debugger after being a VP. I was asked again and
again polite questions, all of which came down to the
meaning of "What the
$%&* is wrong with you?"
This had me thinking.
It's like when you're rich and you sleep
in 5-star hotels and you think that you are a big
winner. What you don't notice is that you're also a big
loser. You gradually lose your ability to sleep in
small, cheap dorm rooms. And that's an ability that
might come in handy some day.
So, scared of the possibility that I would
never again be allowed to write functions, debug my code
and get my hands dirty, I was even more decisive that I
had to go down the ladder. I had to cling on to at least
a few more years of coding life. I don't want to become
middle management so quickly. There's no way back.
This up-gravity. It scares me.
