:: 2001 :: Avocado ::

One day I got a letter from my dear colleagues at the Israeli desk of internet.com asking me to jot the names of the most promising sectors and the 10 most promising start-ups in the Wadi. Like all well known and respected experts here in the Wadi I took the challenge.

I like jotting.

So we start with sectors.

I hate sectors.

Sectors always remind me an Avocado. There is a problem with Avocado. Technically it is a Fruit. I know this cause a friend of mine used to pick them from trees. However, most people consume it with salt, which is a definite characteristic of a vegetable, thus most supermarkets are selling it on the same shelf with Tomatoes and Onions. Now, if I were big Goldman himself or one of the Lehman brothers I wouldn't know which analyst to put on this. Do I put my top Fruit analyst to cover Avocados or do I give the mission to my lead Veg person?

See, sectors are nothing and each company is the whole world. I know this cause a friend of mine work in such. You can have a great Optical/B2C/Wireless/Semiconductor company, you can also have a bummer. Big Goldman does put analysts on sectors. But as you already know big Goldman isn't that big and the brothers aren't that smart.

What will make a promising Avocado is not whether it is a Fruit or a Vegetable. What will make it promising are shape, size, price and how ripe it is.

I'll do companies tomorrow. A Specific list of great promises.
