:: The death of the application -
Part III ::
I know, you're getting tired by now, but
I'm finally going to talk about money. So bear with
me.
Today, I'll tell you why you should
rethink about developing applications.
1. No one else is doing it, so you might
actually have a chance.
2. It's a lot more rewarding than writing
another site which will tank in a year.
3. All of these are nice, but - here comes
the killer. There's much more money in apps. Why? Let's
do the math. How much are you willing to pay for a
useful web-site. A really useful web-site. 5$ a month?
10$ a month? Most likely - Nothing like that. Most
people just aren't willing to pay for web sites.
Nothing. Now - How much is your company paying for that
Office2000 you're using? Or for ghost? Photoshop?
Hundreds of dollars. Hundreds. Per User. Hello? Am I the
only one who sees these numbers?
Lets say you put the effort, develop a
nice app. It's an application for IT managers. Suppose
you have 10000 IT managers in Israel. Lets say 70
percent of the people rip off your application and copy
it. You've got 30 percent corporate users who have the
money and don't want to use illegal software. Lets say
each one pays 500$. That's 1.5M Dollars. Think I'm
exaggerating? Run the numbers yourself.
This is too good to be true. All you have
to do is find an application people need. A hint - It
shouldn't be an information management application.
Those things don't have a chance. But - find the next
killer app, and you can, hold your breath, make some
money.
