:: Job Found :: Virtual Facilities

Settling in at a new job is never easy,
but always interesting. What is rather unsettling is the
following:
When you're introduced to the facilities
of your new place of labor, your employers often tend to
point out some of the sweeter extras that their place
has to offer. You get to see the gym, the nice patio,
the smoking area. If you're lucky you even learn how to
join for the pottery class or the yoga sessions taking
place every second Monday.
Trouble begins only if you're, say, a
programmer. Then you can be quite sure that this tour
would be the last time you get to see any of these
features.
It's not like it's company policy. I would
describe it more as "peer pressure". But at
the end of the day, you just don't see any coders going
off to yoga at Tuesday 11 am. And it's not because they
aren't interested in Oriental Philosophy. It's just that
no one else goes. It would seem inappropriate.
The big winners from this situation are
the non-technical hi-tech workers. In my opinion, they
are the over-all big winners in this whole Silicon Wadi
deal. They can still work 9-to-5 and will never be
looked at when leaving at 2pm for a doctor's
appointment. But they enjoy the pampering of a
hard-to-find-good-labor driven tech firm. We wouldn't
want to disqualify them from the trip to Turkey just
because they don't know what a pointer is, ah?
So they don't get stock option. So what?
Take my stock options and give me those extra 5 hours a
day back. I'll sign that deal any time.
