Mail from Tony Howard & Di Taylor

Hi everyone, just to give you a bit of background, the RSCN asked us
many years ago to put together a leaflet on climbing & trekking in Rum. In
doing so, we raised a number of questions. This document, for which the
British Mountaineering Council gave advice, is still in its 9th Draft and still
being added to in response to comments from the people of Rum and
visiting climbers & trekkers.

There are a number of very important points which remain unanswered,
but which the RSCN assure us we need not worry about, since climbing and
trekking activities in Rum should not  be changed except in extreme
environmental circumstances. However, the RSCN know that we are
concerned about these points (mostly raised above and below) and hope to answer
them soon.

By raising your concerns you can make a contribution to the debate and
hopefully help preserve Rum not only for the local people but also for
climbing & trekking. As this is also the stated aim of RSCN we hope
that everything will work out well in the end, but other more commercial
organisations also have a vested interest in Rum. In our personal
opinion,it is by promoting mass tourism rather than adventure tourism that the
environment of Rum may be threatened.
