Reston, VA, June 13, 2002: In the bottom of the fifth inning, Deja Brew came from a 9-6 deficit to stun Orange Crush with a 10-9 victory! A lack of female players forced Meredith and Bobbi Ann to come off the injured reserve list to avoid a forfeit. Their bravery inspired the rest of the players to rise above the soggy field and pull together for an awesome victory! Although Orange Crush seems like a nice bunch of people, they were no match for the cohesive team effort of Deja Brew!
Reston, VA, June 20, 2002: In a game marred by errors, pulled muscles, and foul language, Deja Brew lost to "Kickin It", 13-5. Kicking proved difficult for both teams, as home plate was located on an uphill slope, just a few feet from the road. Highlights for Deja Brew were few and far between. Paul provided a spark by kicking a massive home run in the third inning. On another play, Team Captain Kristen disregarded her teammates' pleas to stop at third, and scored a run with an awesome slide into home plate. Late in the game, Deja Brew gained some satisfaction by accidentally kicking some foul balls at the "Kickin It" cars. "Kickin It" proved to be gracious winners, however, they may want to consider changing their name to something more appropriate, such as "Bunting It". The two teams will meet again on July 11.
Reston, VA, June 27, 2002: Deja Brew continued their strategy of saving their wins for the playoffs, with a 6-4 loss to "Jimmy's Kickin Shack". Lightning caused the game to be delayed for half an hour, but once the game got underway Deja Brew jumped to an early 2-0 lead. The outfield crew of Steve S., Chad, and Lou made some awesome catches, and Melanie snagged a hard line drive to short. Steve S. tried to confuse The Shack by sliding into first base on what was clearly a HOME RUN kick in the top of the 3rd. However, by the top of the 4th, The Shack had gained the 6-4 lead, and everyone was notifed that the 4th would be the last inning, due to the rain delay. With 2 outs in the top of the 4th with Angie on third, Chad on second, and Team Cap Kristen on first, Lou kicked a solid kick to right field. The Cap got squashed between 2 fielders as she slid into second base while they bobbled the ball, and ultimately dropped it. Called out by the refs, on what was a questionable call, the Cap sustained a mild concussion. The remedy prescribed by the Team Medic was copious amounts of beer at Carpool.
Reston, VA, July 11, 2002: In a game that was closer than the 4-1 score indicates, Deja Brew had the members of Kickin It trembling in their panties and fearing a blow to their undefeated record. Unfortunately, a win for Deja Brew was not to be. Early in the game, the battery of Alex and Kristen put a quick stop to Kickin It's disgraceful practice known as "man-bunting", disrupting their shameful game plan by making some great plays to first. Offensive power was lacking, including a strikeout (!), but Tom was able to score a run on a double by Steve C. In the third inning, Lou made some outstanding catches in left field, including one that Tom tipped but couldn't quite get a grip on. In the top of the 5th, Bobbi made a great play at second by faking a throw home, causing Ryan of Kickin It to leave second. He realized his error as she nailed him with the ball for the last out. Deja Brew tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth, but some lame calls were made and the team was soon able to go to Carpool.
Addendum, July 16, 2002: We would like to wish Kickin It the best of luck in the playoffs, as they are the ONLY undefeated team in the Dominion Division. As long as they don't beat us again, that is.
Reston, VA, July 19, 2002: I had a horrible nightmare last night. It started out as a pleasant dream in which we were scheduled to play We Eat Glue. We had a great warm-up, and we were in the lead after scoring 2 runs on Steve Simpson's kick in the first inning, and Patrick had a 3 run homer in the third inning. The only bad part at this point was Bobbi hurting her knee while diving for a pop fly. Then in the bottom of the third, our fielding in the infield fell apart, with botched plays, dropped throws, mental mistakes, two especially heinous moments which I won't go into detail about, and other miscellaneous disasters. We Eat Glue pulled ahead to a 9-7 lead, which we weren't able to overcome. It was horrible. I woke up in a cold sweat. Phew. I'm glad it was just a dream. Hey Cap, when are we supposed to play that make-up game against We Eat Glue? We're gonna kick their butts!
Reston, VA, July 25, 2002: In the first round of the Dominion Division playoffs, Deja Brew upset the heavily favored "Brewsters Malcontents" by a score of 8-2. The Malcontents came into the game with a 7-1 record, but went home wondering what the hell happened. Tom made two double plays, earning defensive player of the game, and Steve S. had a homer and a double or triple as offensive player of the game. Kristen got the last out of the game with a fire throw at the guy's legs. Patrick did an outstanding job at pitcher. Deja Brew plays the Blacktop Allstars at 6:30 this Wednesday, July 31st!
Reston, VA, July 31, 2002: Deja Brew's season came to a screeching halt today with a 4-1 loss to the Blacktop Allstars, in the second round of the playoffs. It was a very close game, that hinged on a three-run double in the third inning by BTA's pitcher Ever (sp?). Kristen scored our lone run on a double by Patrick in the fourth inning, getting a nice scrape on her leg as she slid into home plate. Angie had two great plays at shortstop in the first and second innings. Dave did a great job at third, making all 3 outs in the 4th inning. Deja Brew is planning an intense off-season training program, including snow practices, so we'll be ready to whup some Dominion Division asses next year!
Reston, VA, April 18, 2003: In a close game against Pop Rocks & Coke last night, Deja Brew pulled out a 5-4 win in the bottom of the fifth inning. The team, which is composed of a few Brew's from last year as well as three new acquisitions from Orange Crush and some rookies, played well considering it was the first game of the season. It appears that the absence of alcohol from the game is a welcome change. The only injuries to report are some slight headaches from post-game activity. The team is hoping to carry the momentum into next week's game against the Blacktop Allstars. Go Brew!
