Great Coral Reef
The Kushimoto coastal area of Wakayama Prefecture contains the world’s northernmost great coral reef. In November 2005 it was registered under the Ramsar convention as an important international wetland.
Despite its northern location the warm Japan Current has made the Kushimoto coastal area into one of Japan’s diving and snorkeling paradises. It is home to 120 different types of coral and supports an ecosystem of tropical life that includes 1000 types of fish.
