MINISTER'S MESSAGE

Welcome to this Web site, a venture undertaken thanks to the considerable talents of one of our church members!

The Wakefield Pastoral Charge is in the heart of the beautiful Gatineau hills - cottage and ski country - and is composed of the congregations which meet at Rupert, Alcove and Wakefield United Churches. Our community life is marked many ways: Sunday morning worship, evening singsongs, social barbecues and fun car rallies.

Sunday morning services are held at 9:30 a.m., alternatively at Alcove or Rupert. We then have a second service in Wakefield at St. Andrew's at 11:00 a.m. A Sunday school program is offered at both services from mid-September through June.

There is much warmth, talent, and vitality among the folks here. They wish to welcome you and yours to join the mix!

MISSION STATEMENT

We, the United Church family of Alcove-Rupert-Wakefield
enriched by God's word, commit:

~ to be a Christian-based community ministry

~ to be flexible and open to change in our worship
and in our community

~ to value our heritage and Christian beliefs

~ to grow with each other in faith, hope and joy

COMMUNITY

The communities served by the Wakefield Pastoral Charge are located approximately 20-25 minutes from Ottawa, Canada's capital, in the municipality of La Pêche. The three churches are about three - five miles in distance from each other, with two of them nestled along the Gatineau river.

There are many amenities to be found in Wakefield including a large hospital, police station, fire hall, chiropractor, dental and medical clinics, funeral parlour, seniors home and many others.

Although not considered to be a wealthy community by urban standards, these communities enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities with many lakes, rivers and natural forests nearby including the Gatineau Park. There are many golf and ski resorts as well.

Many of the families living in the area are descendants of the original homesteaders and in recent years, families have moved here to enjoy rural living. A majority of our congregation are retired farmers, or come from a farming background.

The community is growing slowly due to an expansion of a divided highway and nearby housing developments. In the summer months many cottagers spend their time here. A steam train operates from Hull to Wakefield between Spring and Fall, providing day trips for tourists.

The local public school has almost doubled it's population in the past 10 years. In addition to local farms, businesses in the area include a bed and breakfast, pharmacy, bakery and general store, artists, lawyers and accountants, and many restaurants and cafes. Many residents commute daily to Ottawa to make their living.
