My report is going to be about Water filtration. Water sometimes contains bacteria that make it look and smell bad.  These bacteria’s can make you sick if you drink the water.  Water must be cleaned before people can consume it.  To clean it, water must go through the following steps:

1.        Aeration : this adds air to the water.  It allows gases in the water to escape and adds oxygen to the water.

2.       Coagulation: the process that dirt and particles are stuck together so they can be removed from the water.

3.       Sedimentation :  gravity pulls the particles of dirt to the bottom of the cylinder.

4.       Filtration :  through the sand and pebbles most of the dirt is removed.

After all this process has happened, the water should be clean and safe for drinking.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

   KNIFE

   2  LITER SODA BOTTLE

   ELECTRIC DRILL W/ 1/8” BIT

   PLASTIC STRAW

   LARGE CLEAR VASE

   COTTON BALLS

   COARSE GRAVEL (2 CUPS)

   FINE GRAVEL (2 CUPS)

   FINE GRAVEL (2 CUPS)

   LARGE-GRAINED SAND (2 CUPS)

   FINE-GRAINED SAND (2 CUPS)

   PAPER TOWELS

   MUDDY WATER

PROBLEM STATEMENT

How does water filtration work to make dirty water clean and safe for drinking?

HYPOTHESIS

The Muddy water will be filtered through the materials and become cleaner than the muddy water before and will become safer to drink.

PROCEDURE

(1)               With and adult’s help, use a knife to cut the bottom off the bottle then drill a hole through the bottle cap just large enough to pass the straw through so that it fits tightly.

(2)             Place the bottle upside down so it’s neck rest in the vase. The straw should stick out through the bottom hole

(3)             Pack cotton balls into the neck of the bottle. Then put in these layers in the following order: Course gravel, Fine gravel, large grained sand, fine grained sand, absorbent paper

(4)                Pour muddy water into the top of the bottle. Very shortly, water will drain out the bottom into the vase (A). What color is it? (you may need to use a lot of muddy water; the cotton at the bottom will absorb quite a bit before it lets the cleansed water drip out.)

OPINION

I did enjoy the experiment, because it was fun placing all the materials I needed. It was also enjoyable because you got to see the water getting filtered by running down the sand and the gravel. Yes I would recommend this experiment to others because it is a very enjoyable project .

CONCLUSION

My hypothesis was accurate, because the water got filtered and it was not muddy. At the end it became safe to drink.

Hello everyone well !   My project was one of a few in my 5th grade class that was pick to go to our 2002 Science Fair, I am very happy about it and I had allot of fun going to the fair I won some ribbons and I got to see all the Super Cool Project's from all the school and I got to hang out with some friends.

Here are some photos from The Science Fair

I want to thank my Mom, Eileen and Dad for all their help !
