Background Story of Jason

A Memorial For My Grandson, Jason Loyd

1998 - 2000

BACKGROUND: As you can see by the photo, Jason is a beautiful little 18 month old boy and has a personality to match.

First, I love him very much and he needs all the love and support he can get. You see, Jason has a neuroblastoma tumor. He was first diagnosed on Sept. 10th, 1999. The tumor was huge when discovered and not operable so chemo was the choice of treatment.

TRIPS TO THE HOSPITAL. Jason was diagnosed with Stage IVs Neuroblastoma. At this age, his chance of survival after two years is about 30%. (Now, in March of 2000, about 50%) Since the onslaught of this horrible tumor, Jason has gone through a biopsy surgery, intensive chemo treatments that last for 72 hours, shots in his legs to keep his blood counts up, TPN feedings 12 hours a day, bone marrow extractions and so much discomfort its too lengthy to explain. In between the hospital visits Jason seems to recover good and other than the broviac tube inserted in his chest and the large scar from surgery you would never know he was sick. We are all so thankful that during these times he doesn't appear to be in too much discomfort or pain. (He is one tough little guy)

HOSPITAL AND DOCTORS: Jason and his parents live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the hospital they practically live at is Spectrum (Devos Children's) Hospital. Since Jason's life was put into their hands, "literally", they have so far succeeded in shrinking the tumor considerably. (In March 2000, its been removed) The staff at the hospital have been great, especially the nurses. (who know how to communicate with people) And we all thank them for that.

HELP FROM FRIENDS: I need to express Stephanie wishes here to thank everyone from the bottom of their hearts who have gone out of their way to help them. A special thanks from all the people where I work for their support. The donations from pop cans are so much appreciated along with the wonderful collection from the office and all the people in the shop.
