Most commercial buildings
and some homes have piers
under the foundation.

Typical Bell Bottom
Foundation Pier

A pier is a drilled shaft varying in diameter and

depth. Depending on the size of the structure,

there could be as many as 100 drilled piers or

as few as one. After the pier hole is drilled, it is

filled with concrete. Pier drilling is used for

certain structures, houses and buildings to help

minimize structural damage done by ground

shifting or ground settling. Pier drilling can also

be used for bridges and overpasses, fence

posts, boat ramps and sign posts.
