Membership Requirements

How to become a member?

Those eligible for active membership: Women no less than 16-years of age who are blood descendants, lineal or collateral, of men and women who served honorably in the Army, Navy or Civil Service of the Confederate States of America, or gave material aid to the Cause. Also eligible are those women who are lineal or collateral blood descendants of members or former members of UDC.

Proof of eligibility: Proof of ancestor service to the Confederate States of America may be obtained, if available, upon request from one of the following sources:

Applicants for membership shall be proposed by two (2) members in good standing, in writing, to the Executive Board. After approval by the Board, the name will be submitted to the membership for approval. Transfers into the Chapter shall be handled in the same manner.

No applicant whose ancestor took the oath of allegiance prior to April 9, 1865, shall be considered eligible.

The three classes of membership shall be Active, Associate & Honorary.

On 12 July 1994 our name "United Daughters of the Confederacy" was officially approved by the Patent Trademark Office of the United States and may not be used without the express written permission of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, 328 North Boulevard, Richmond,
VA 23220-4057.

On 26 July 1994 our insignia (logo) was also approved by the Patent Trademark Office of the United States. Therefore they are not to be used without permission and when displayed must have the copyright symbol. As stated in the 1997 UDC Bylaws on page 41, Article 34 Insignia Section 2, a & b.
