     Grandparents
Being a Grandparent has certainly changed.
Once it meant periodic visits with the grandkids. Baking cookies for those special days of babysitting and sending them home. Now it means getting up every morning and getting the kids ready for school. We are a generation of Grandparents raising Grandchildren. We take them to their ball games,we listen to their tales of woe. We see that they are fed and clothed and take them to the doctor when they are hurt or ill.We have a full time job these days..These children are ours. We may not have given birth to them, but we are bonded just the same. We don't have all the grandchildren all the time, but just have a few fall into our care. The others live in other places and that part is still the same. We still get to play the Grandparents role when they come to visit, and the rest of the time we are the Grand Parent.
Grandma sat in her rocker or favorite chair.
She baked cookies and told stories.
Going to Grandma's house was always a treat.
Made memories to later share.

Grandparents were good for sleepovers.
Made pallets on the floor.
Grandma let us make tents and things
Using her blankets and her covers.

Grandparents used to live far away.
At least a mile or two.
We'd hop in the car and make the trip,
Playing car games and singing the songs of the day.

Grandpa was always out in the shed,
Making something new or fixing up the old.
He'd talk to us  while he worked,
And always came in and tucked us in bed.

Grandparents were always a mystery.
Where did they get those special candies and treats? They always had time to sit and talk
Tell us things from the past and history.

Grandparents were a special breed,
Always so wise and calm.
Many a child listened to Grandma or Grandpa
For bits of wisdom on how to succeed.

Oh, for the good old days.
Just to go back for a few minutes or an hour.
Back to the tea parties under the willows
Back to the hugs and "I love you always".
