Web Sites 101 by LMSoft, www.lmsoft.com $30
Sensing an opening in the non-technical end of the market, Web authoring manufacturers have been trying to design user-friendly products to lure new customers. Canadian company LMSoft jumps into the fray with Web Creator 2 ($30 street) aimed squarely at users with little or no programming experience.

April 26, 2000 Flash is Evil Flash is "the solution for producing and delivering high-impact web sites." It's also a solution for making your site highly annoying and downright unusable. W-N does not use FLASH because we have not had the time to learn the code yet. When that time comes we will only use where it is usefull. Ie.: to amuse, speed image delivery and inprove information delivery. So donot block FLASH on our account. John Curtin's site is an example of a good use of FLASH

From our expert Norbert Wienholz

It is perfectly doable to have an efficient and user-friendly Flash site; just as it is perfectly possible to have a confusing HTML site (as we all very well know...). Most Flash developers are still in the 'new toy stage', where they just go overboard with their capabilities; but there are also some promising sites out there showing how Flash can be used efficiently.
I don't think the problem of most Flash sites is the technology per se, but rather the way the designers and programmers have implemented it.
And, just like in a lot of situations, there are some tools that are more appropriate to some tasks, and others that are more appropriate to different ones. Some sites just scream out for the Flash treatment, others are served just fine with straightforward HTML.

For some tips on Web marketing, you could try Web marketing sites like Jim World Gazette (www.virtualpromote.com) or Wilson Internet's Web Promotion and E-Marketing (www.wilsonweb.com), to name a few.

If you are only going to be registering one name, I'd advise to not use a hyphenated one. Most domain names that are made of compound words or phrases omit the dash. People have become accustomed to that practice. Adding a hyphen is confusing. An analogy is to give your child a common name with an alternate spelling. For the rest of their lives they have to tell people how to spell their names. If you have a hyphen, you'll always have to tell people to add it. Imagine the difficulties of promoting such a name on the radio. Larger corporations that can afford to buy many domains will often pick up various permutations of their corporate domain. That would include names with hyphens, and other top-level domains, such as .net, .org. .ca and so on. If you can afford to do so, then go right ahead. Competition has caused the price of domains to fall considerably. DomainsAtCost.ca offers a great deal with most domains going for $14 each. Canadian .ca domains go for a bit more at $25.
We now have www.WindowsOnWestmount.com and www.WednesdayNight.net (soon active)

About Time US The keepers of the official time standard for the United States - the National Institute of Standards and Technology - provide a time reading within one second of the atomic time.

Oct 3, 2000 - Marina del Rey, California - ICANN announces that the application process has been completed. The new domain extensions will be awarded to registries in December 2000. The proposed new domains include: .web, .inc, .kids, .shop, .store, .firm, .law, .biz, .nom, .news, .site .xxx, .tel, .sex and more. The approved TLDs are scheduled to be made available starting early 2001. ICAAN however has not released the exact time and date.

Freeservers This domain-registration site will give you 20MB of Web site space free, as well as a host of terrific features (you don't actually need a domain to have a site hosted here). For instance, you can import or upload sites wholesale via FTP or a Web-based tool, or build new pages using easy-to-follow templates. Freeservers also processes e-cbc sent to your domain (if you have one), either by forwarding it to the account you specify or by storing it in a Web-based cbcbox at the Freeservers site. Its tools for analyzing your site's traffic are sterling: You can view daily or weekly breakdowns of the pages that surfers visit, the browsers they use for surfing, and the referral pages that send them to your site. Not bad, in exchange for letting the service display just one ad banner.

There are several free hosting services that allow members to run scripts from a cgi-bin directory. Examples include Hypermart, WebJump, Tripod, Virtual Avenue and Dreamwater. The usual catch is that you have to post their ads on your pages if you want to use their free services. Even if you run a perl script, if a page is generated by that script, it will cause the server to insert an ad or serve a pop-up window with an ad. If you'd rather not bother debugging perl scripts, there are also a variety of free, remotely hosted scripts that you can insert in to your own Web pages. These are usually commonly used scripts such as message boards, counters, guestbooks, chat areas and so on. You can investigate some at www.cgi2go.com, www.cgiforme.com, www.free-cgi.com or go to the CGI Resource Index's comprehensive list at cgi.resourceindex.com Thanks to Web Q&A MARK STACHIEW

Demo Domain (www.demo-domain.com) is a great place to find demos for the big-name games, such as "Quake II." The home page has a refreshingly simple design. There are no busy plug-ins or unnecessary frames. Every section is clearly marked. A handy list of the most recent demos keeps you updated without having to sift through the old stuff. Demo Domain also has a couple of pages' worth of game patches, but the lack of clear explanations and instructions may make novices wary.

Companies like GeoCities (www.oocities.org), Tripod (www.tripod.com) and WhoWhere?'s Angelfire (www.angelfire.com) give away free space for Web sites to people eager to have their own home on the Internet.

The free services are also appealing because Web sites on them are grouped into categories, communities or neighborhoods, making it easy for users to find sites about topics they're interested in.

On GeoCities, for example, you'll find a fascinating site called Forum Romanum about life in Ancient Rome (http://www.oocities.org/Athens/Forum/6946/rome.html) in a neighborhood focused on education, literature, poetry and philosophy. In the TV area, you'll find quirky sites like Arnold's, dedicated to Fonzie and the gang (http://www.oocities.org/TelevisionCity/5867/happy.htm).

GeoCities, the biggest of the bunch with 1.3 million so-called homesteaders had the Yahoo! search engine (www.yahoo.com) and Japanese high-technology Softbank invested $30 million U.S. in the venture

To see how Yahoo! is doing compared with other Web sites, visit Media Metrix (www.mediametrix.com), a company that monitors audiences on the Net. Click on the button labeled New Media Watch.

Or go to Search Engine Watch (www.SearchEngineWatch.com),where you can keep up with what's going on in the industry, including how the search engines and directories are doing financially as well as technically.

Since its launch last July, about $5 million has been invested in Planet411. A European venture-capital fund that doesn't want to be identified has pumped in $4 million of that and now owns about 4.5 per cent of the firm, said Planet411 chief financial officer Victor Cantore. (That fund is ready to provide up to $10 million in financing, he added.) More than $500,000 came from Chouinard and Farag, with the rest coming from employees and friends.

C-Net's Gamecenter (www.gamecenter.com) is one of the best places to get your gaming news, reviews, demos and patches. These folks have their collective finger on the pulse of the gaming industry and often have exclusives long before other sites. The amount of information available can be daunting for those just looking for a new game. But, after acclimating yourself to the cluttered interface, a trip to the download page will reveal more than 1,500 demos, patches, shareware and utilities for DOS, Windows and Macintosh. Each file comes with a clear, concise description of the game or patch, plus downloading instructions.
