Mexico's Copyright Law provides increased protection to meet
international standards.
Patents, trademarks, brands, and industrial designs, computer
software programs, models and ads are protected under the Law
of Development and Protection of Industrial Property.
In all cases, the Mexican Intellectual Property Institute is
the agency authorized to issue the registrations.
Processes and products may be patented for no more than 20 years
except for patents on chemical or other drugs which may be extended for
an additional three years, provided the patentee licenses any company with
a majority Mexican stock for the use of that patent.

Computer software programs are granted the same protection as
literary works, for the author's lifetime plus 50 years. Also, producers
of sound recordings are now protected for 50 years from distribution of
unauthorized copies.
Industrial designs may be registered for a 15 year period while
models may be registered for 10 years. These periods may not be extended.
On the other hand, trademarks or ads may be registered for a 10 year period
which may be renewed for equal term periods. The right to the exclusive
use of a trade name for an industrial, commercial or service establishment
is protected for ten years.
