Mahathir is what a true leader is all about

I REFER to the letter "Thanks to Dr M, country saved from destruction" (The
                  Star, Oct 1).

I am among the silent majority who whole-heartedly agree with Silent Majority of
                  Subang Jaya.

I salute Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his vision and the
spirit of Malaysia Boleh. We would not have been able to sail through the
economic turbulence if not for his leadership. A leader must be bold and resort
                  to unpopular decisions.

He has shown his leadership qualities over and over again. Proof of this are the
national car (Proton) project, KLIA, Twin Towers, and the currency controls.

Reading about his trips abroad to attract foreign investments, to rationalise
governmental policies, to project a positive image of Malaysia, and to voice
concerns of weak nations makes me wonder if the opposition can ever do the
                  same. I doubt it.

I do not really understand the struggles of the opposition. If they are fighting for
democracy, are they referring to liberties and basic rights.

If so, I would like to say the first right my family and I have been deprived of was
the right to enjoy security during my outings in Kuala Lumpur.

I also do not want my hard-earned money which goes to taxes used to contain
                  demonstrations.

Enough is enough. Dr Mahathir is a true leader.

                  R. M. R. of Kuala Lumpur. (via e-mail)
