Intro
In this webquest you will
learn the fundamentals of installing a dual boot system. The two operating
systems used in this webquest are
Red Hat Linux 7.2
and
Windows 98 SE
The Task
-
to install linux on a windows based system you need to have a linux instalation cd and a desent sized hard drive
-
you can get a linux install cd two ways
on line at linux.org or buy it at a store
-
if you decide to download linux readhat 7.2 you will have to have a broad band modem because it is two cds and downloading with a 56k modem will take days and WILL be frustrating
-
after you have a install cd you will need to know how much free space you have on your hard drive and also need to decide how much space you will set aside for linux and how much space you are useing. you will have to install a new partition for linux
-
to begin installing linux put in the linux install cd and restart the computer. the install will automaticly start
-
at one point in the install it will ask you to create a partition for linux. set the partiton in the free space on your hard drive
-
after you set the partition it will ask you what type of operating system loader you will use and which operating system to use. LILO (linux loder) or Grub loader
-
LILO is older and has less bugs while GRUB is more graphical and has many bugs
-
if you decide to use GRUB you MUST set windows as the primary operating system or it will not start and you will have to reinstall linux with windows set as the primary operating system
-
next select the components you want to install and start the file copy.
