
On Febuary 12, Latvia Post featured the town Ogre in its Coats of Arms of Regions of Latvia series. The 0.15Ls stamp is designed by E.Viliama and printed in the printing house Joh.Enschede, the Netherlands
The Coat of Arms of the town Ogre was affirmed on December 8,1938. It
is a symbol of a health
resort, blue background means healthy climate, three pine-trees symbolise
richness of forests, waved
line in silver-flow of the river Ogre through hilly landscape of the
town. Ogre is situated at the
Vidzeme region where the river Ogre falls into the river Daugava. Ogre
is known for its beatiful
scenery which made it a famous summer resort. Construction of a railway
line linking it to Riga made
it even more popular. Relief of the city is rather hilly. There is
a hillock formation called Ogre
Kangari which stretches throught the whole city. The town Ogre is one
of the "greenest" towns in
Latvia-more than half of the territory is covered with forests where
the most popular species are
fir-tree and pine-tree. In the 19th century in present-day area of
Ogre there where only estates and
peasant houses which were the property of Riga city. The development
of the town Ogre began in
1861 after the construction of Riga-Daugavpils railwai and highway
lines from Riga to Daugavpils. In
1928 Ogre received status of a town. Ogre is the 10th largest among
77 cities and towns in Latvia
according to its population (27808 inhabitants). In the sphere of national
economy Ogre represents
mainly light industry, most important branches are knitwear production
and food industry.
